Dear Students and/or Parents,

There are hundreds of tutors in Los Angeles so why should you hire me?

If you're looking for a tutor who is fully capable of bringing out the best in you/your child then I am absolutely the right person to hire.

If you want to excel and become self-sufficient then I am the right tutor for you.

If you're looking for a knowledgeable, effective, economical and patient tutor with a sensitivity towards individual learning styles then I am definitely the right person for your needs.

My style:

I see tutoring as a collaborative effort between a teacher and a student to solve problems and tackle challenges so that each individual's highest potential can be met.
Regardless of how enormous or difficult the challenge, we can tackle it together if we do so from the right angle and tailor learning to your unique needs.
During our first meeting or phone call I will patiently listen to your concerns and then together we will set some goals for how to proceed and where we want to be after each lesson. We will do our very best to meet these goals together.

About me:

I am an intelligent Philosophy student. I am also a published writer and poet. I have worked as a professional editor and lecturer.

I am punctual, can prioritize tasks, and have great time management skills.

Work Experience:

I have worked as a tutor since I was 15 years old. I began as volunteer after-school staff and have worked my way up to consistent employment in the homes of wonderful families. I have also worked in more formal setting such as the Hayward Unified School District.

I have extensive experience with homework help, K-5, and have taught social science, literature, English spelling, and grammar, as well as other relevant subjects to high school and college students.
I also help edit college essays and applications. I write great cover letters and resumes.

Currently I have several regular clients who receive help writing college level papers.

I have an extensive resume available upon request. I am CPR/AED/First Aid trained, have transportation and can accommodate special needs or English as second language.

Special Needs:

I have been formally employed as a behavioral aid/instructor working with children with autism, ADD, ADHD, developmental and learning challenges, and other special needs. This experience has been incredibly moving. I have learned patience, and understanding, as well as an appreciation for people's abilities.

My approach is a fun-friendly method; however, I know that children need structure and will benefit from being held accountable.

Related Hobbies and Interests:

I am spoken word artist, poet, and event organizer/promoter. I have conducted writing workshops and reading groups.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

My relevant experience range from private 1:1 tutoring, in most academic subjects, with bilingual and Special Education children, to classic Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), specifically Discrete Trial Training (DTT), as well as familiarity with using Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). I have been trained in Floortime, Play-therapy, Social skills classes, as well as Behavior Modification lessons, using the token method, for parents and guardians of patients. I am a thorough and detailed note taker, and have adequate training in data recording.

I have worked with patients as young as two/three years old in Early Childhood Intervention Programs of Autistic Spectrum Disorder and related disorders, as well as helped mainstream higher functioning children with Autism within their appropriate age group classrooms at the Unified School District.

I have worked specifically with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The severity of symptoms ranged from verbal to nonverbal, aggression and/or tantrum prone to very friendly but unaware of appropriate boundaries.

Public Speaking

I have been performing spoken word poetry and giving speeches on variety of subjects at national and international conferences/events since the age of fourteen. I use improve, theater, voice lessons, and acting techniques to help students with public speaking. I have been an active member of Toastmasters for 5 years.
