Each student has their own unique style of learning, and I love helping students succeed and turn learning into an adventure. As a professional educator of many years, there is nothing more exciting than to watch the light bulb of self discovery turn on as students apply their education to their personal lives. My specialty is teaching all types of students and my goal is to find the style that works for them. My calm composure and positive attitude has often been recognized as the grounding that helps pave the way for students to build their own self-esteem.

Not only am I experienced, but I hold a master's in special education with a focus on learning disabilities. My B.A. is in English, and I am a certified CA. English teacher, grades 6-12. I also have taught and am certified in Montessori- grades 3-5. The beautiful Montessori innovative style of self exploration can be applied to all grades, including high school. For years I worked as a public school home/hospital teacher for students who couldn't be in school for emotional or physical reasons. My students ranged from 3rd grade to seniors in high school. The setting was a one-on-one teaching program, which I excel in.

I also have been a successful teacher in many different situations ranging from teaching ESL in Greece, to a middle school special education teacher on an indian reservation in Montana. Not only have I taught in schools, but I also have tutored adults in ESL and students in elementary school.

I am flexible with time, and even though I have a four hour cancellation policy, I understand that emergencies do happen and therefore offer makeup classes. Because I understand that any "teaching" situation is also a "learning" situation, I appreciate feedback.

It will be my pleasure to work with you as we explore the world of learning!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have my M.A. in Special Education, with my focus on learning difficulties and Study Skills. I also have been a Spec. Ed. teacher in a public school and have taught in Special Education Study Skills classes. For years I worked as a public school home/hospital teacher, working individually with each student. Several of my students were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. In working with them, I helped them build their self-esteem and develop good study skill habits.

Aspergers

Having an M.A. in Special Education, with a focus on Learning Disabilities has helped me understand Asperger Syndrome. I have taught students with Aspergers and I work at finding the interests that the student has and help build their interest to other subjects.

Autism

Having my M.A. in Special Education has given me tools and understanding to work with autistic students. For three years, I was a personal assistant to an autistic middle school student. I helped her adjust to a public school setting and succeed in her learning and social skills.

Dyslexia

I have my M.A. in Special Education, with my focus on learning difficulties and Study Skills. I also have been a Spec. Ed. teacher in a public school and have taught in Special Education Study Skills classes. For years I worked as a public school home/hospital teacher, working individually with each student. Several of my students were diagnosed as dyslexic. In working with them, I helped them build their self-esteem while working with their disability.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am Montessori Certified to teach ages 6-9. I also have taught in a private Montessori school for 3- 6th grade. My Master's in Special Education included a teacher certification for K-12. While being a Home/Hospital teacher for a public school district, I have taught elementary aged students from 3rd through 6th grade. I can make teaching fun and something that will entice your child in the learning process.

English

My B.A. is in English and I have taught English, grammar, and literature in public and private schools, ranging from grades 3-12. I hold a Teacher Certification for teaching English. I love the process of learning and have many success stories where students who didn't like English, as a subject, learned to enjoy it.

ESL/ESOL

Not only do I have a B.A. in English and a CA.teacher certification for English, but I also am certified to teach ESL/ESOL with my CA. CLAD(Cross Cultural, Language, and Academic Development) certification. In Greece, I taught ESOL in a private language school. Having lived in other countries, I respect the rich, cultural heritage that make up our world.

Government & Politics

I have taught elementary and middle school U.S. Government and enjoy this subject. I feel my enthusiasm is passed on to the students and turns Government into a subject that they can relate to.

Proofreading

My command of vocabulary and grammar is excellent. I also am very focused when proofreading and can catch minute errors. When proofreading, i take into account what the goal of the writer and reader are to ensure that the finished paper illustrates that goal.

Public Speaking

I have taken 3 workshops from a professional media consultant and have been trained to speak in front of up to 150 people.

Reading

I love reading and writing. Over the years, I have written four books and also am a poet. Expressing myself through writing is a very important part of my life. With my love of reading and writing, and my personal teaching style, I help communicate this love to my students. Because it is so important to me, I excel in also finding out where a student's performance, in these two modalities, is lacking and help them improve.

Special Needs

Having received my M.A. in Special Education and having been a Spec. Ed. teacher and assistant, I have worked with students with special needs and can be creative to help uncover and develop their strengths.

Study Skills

I have my M.A. in Special Education, with my focus on learning difficulties and Study Skills. I also have been a Spec. Ed. teacher in a public school and have taught in Special Education Study Skills classes. I am a public school home/hospital teacher and have students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Aspergers, Autism, and/or Dyslexia,. In working with them I create helpful study skill habits and help build their self-esteem. I love the process of learning and have many success stories.

Writing

Being able to express yourself through writing is a valuable skill and a tool for introspection. Like all things, writing can be learned through specific techniques. I have written four young adult books and love bringing out the creativity in my students and helping them learn their own personal style of writing.

Caring and understanding — Vanita helped my 6th grader with English and Science. She went over how the textbook was structured and how knowing that could help with the preparation for a test. She also helped my child with an English writing assignment. My child needs time and Vanita was very patient. She gave us an learning style assessment and is willing to cater to every child's needs based on that. The communication w ...
