Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) or English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) primarily geared toward international students that are adolescents to mature adults. Any sub-subjects in ESL can be covered ranging from grammar to pronunciation to cultural idioms and etiquette to writing/reading and vocabulary acquisition. I have had 6+ years of teaching ESL and ESOL in the subjects of grammar, reading/writing, vocabulary, pronunciation, conversation & idioms, and TOEFL prep in speaking and writing.
English has many grammatical concepts, some of which are difficult for new learners to grasp. My aim is to enable students to notice and understand the differences in forms, meanings and usages among these various grammar concepts. We will use both textbook and real-life examples as well as those from students' own situations to discuss why and when some grammar uses are most appropriate versus others. For example, when would we use "I have been working here for 2 years." vs. "I HAD been working here for 2 years."? Or, "The cat was chased by the dog" vs. "The dog was chased by the cat."?
Proofreading is very important for all writers no mater what their proficiency level is. As a tutor and instructor, I help students by proofreading their work in underlining awkward or inconsistent phrasings in their writing, in suggesting better ways to organize their thoughts and ideas on paper, in brainstorming and outlining prior to writing, and in noticing errors so that the students themselves can become more proficient in proofreading themselves in the future. Proofreading includes but not limited to checking for spelling and punctuation errors, top-down/general-to-specific organizational formats, clear expression of ideas with solid supporting details.
As an ESL teacher for 7 years and having presented in front of English speakers in my Bachelors and Masters programs as well as presented at a professional conference for ELT (English Language Teaching) professionals, I can teach students how to be more confident, succinct and poised speakers in front of their peers. Speaking: Structured practice for all 6 speaking tasks for the TOEFL with many timed practices; suggestions for how to break down the planning portion of each speech in order to manage your time well. Frequent feedback on your pronunciation, sentence structure/syntax, content, and organization of your speech; help you analyze the prompt and prep an easy and fast outline during the :20 to :30 prep time allowed for each task.
Writing: Structured lessons on how to prepare for both the integrated and independent writing tasks. Organized prep for introduction, body and conclusion for each type of response. Appropriate phrasings for each type of prompt possible. A lot of feedback using common editing symbols in your written responses will be used.
Vocabulary acquisition is one of the most difficult things to grasp in learning any new language. Words cannot carry meaning and "stick" for learners until several things happen: they can visualize the words, they know the word family associated, they know all the connotations associated, they know the context in which the word is usually used, and they know the collocations that may be attached to the word. As a tutor/instructor, I would help students know these aspects of new vocabulary, review them and use them repeatedly and have students devise their own sentences using these words or use them in conversations in order to fully acquire vocabulary into their lexicon.
