My experience as a swim instructor and coach during high school and college fostered my passion for teaching. I taught swim lessons for seven years and coached a club swim team for one year. After graduating from UCLA, I was hired to teach English 10 and English Language Development at Hawthorne High School in California. I taught for 5 years and coached cross-country and managed Students Run L.A. for two years. After I got married, my husband and I moved overseas and then to New Jersey. While living in New Jersey, I subbed at the nearby high schools and middle schools until I accepted a long-term substitute assignment as a 7th & 8th grade Language arts teacher. I also tutored adult English language learners and helped them with their language skills and development.
I have a Master of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership. I fulfilled all of the requirements necessary for a California single subject credential in English with a Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate. I also acquired a New Jersey standard certificate as a teacher of English. I enjoyed the various roles in a high school and middle school environment, but the students were always my primary focus, whether it was in the classroom or through sports.
I am currently a stay-at-home mom of a 16 month old boy and I would like to take steps to get involved in the field of education again. I feel that my years of experience in the classroom and in sports would be an asset for anyone seeking a tutor.
