I have been a classroom teacher for twenty years. I have taught 5th through 12th grades. I have a MA and BA in History with minors in comparative religions and museum and archival studies. I also hold an AAS in Business Administration and Finance. I specialize in history, geography, economics, study skills, reading, writing, public speaking and business class.

I taught for three semesters at the University of Redlands. I also taught overseas in Japan for three years and have a working knowledge of that language. I was also a member of debate teams in high school and college and taught debate at several schools. I worked for 5 years part time at Sylvan Learning Centers where I was trained in teaching reading and comprehension, and study skills.

ADD/ADHD

As part of my credentialing process I took a course in teaching children with special needs at the University of California Riverside. Additionally, I received many hours of inservice training on special needs student through my district. Lastly, my younger brother and son both have ADD/ADHD so I am familiar with working with these students.

American History

I hold an MA and BA in history. I taught high school US history for the past four years at a public charter high school. Before that I taught 8th grade US History for eleven years and fifth grade US History for five years. Additionally, I have a passion for historical study that I bring to my lessons that I believe helps encourage others to appreciate the study of history not just as a way to achieve a grade but as a way to help them understand the world they live in.

Anthropology

As a history major with an MA and a BA I took two courses in Social Anthropology and one in Physical Anthropology. In addition the school of historical study I was trained in emphasized using paradigms from many subjects, including anthropology, to have a better understanding of how people and culture developed.

Archaeology

As a history major with an MA and a BA I took several courses involving archaeology. I worked two summers while in high school and college on digs at native American sites in the Mohawk River Valley and at the site where the Battle of Saratoga took place. Additionally, as a boy I wanted to be an archaeologist and it has been a personal hobby of mine and I have read extensively on the subject.

Classics

As a holder of an MA in history, I have studied and read extensively in the classics. I have taken two courses in the literature of the classical period. I have a fondness for Virgil and Cicero.

Dyslexia

As part of my credentialing process I took a course in teaching children with special needs at the University of California Riverside. Additionally, I received many hours of inservice training on special needs student through my district. Lastly, my younger brother was Dyslexic and I worked with him as a private tutor until he graduated from high school, so I am familiar with working with these students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher and have taught at the elementary level.

European History

I hold a Master's Degree in European History and taught AP History for many years.

Microsoft Publisher

I have been using the entire Microsoft Office suite for over ten years. As part of my credentialing process I took a course through UCR Extension that was designed to teach teachers to use Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point and Outlook.

Microsoft Windows

During my credentialing process I took a course in Computer based technology. In that course I was instructed in the use of Windows. I have never owned a computer that did not use Windows and have become some what of an expert in trouble shooting any problems.

Public Speaking

I am a twenty year teacher who not only had to be a good public speaker in class, but I also had to give presentations and speechs as part of my job. Additionally, I studied debate and public speaking in high school and college and taught debate for several years.

Religion

My minor for my BA in History was Comparative Religions, and as a Social Studies teacher I was required to teach about the various world religions in my world history classes.

SAT Reading

I led the SAT prep team at my last school and worked at Sylvan Learning Centers where I also taught test preparation.

Social Studies

I have a master's degree in history and have taught social studies for twenty years.

Sociology

I hold a Masters degree in History. During my undergraduate and graduate career I took two sociology courses as the philosophy of history I study uses paradigms from all areas of study.

Special Needs

As part of my credentialing process I took a course in teaching children with special needs at the University of California Riverside. Additionally, I received many hours of inservice training on special needs student through my district, so I am familiar with working with these students.

Study Skills

I taught study skills at Sylvan learning center, was trained in AVID, which is a study skills based curriculum for at risk students, and taught a 6th grade study skills class for two years.
