If you're a high school student, I can understand if you feel like English isn't your favorite class.
Maybe it's your LEAST favorite class... after all, there is a great deal of writing in journals and essays, learning proper grammar and sentence or paragraph structure, and probably the one you hate most... reading silly stories about people you've never heard of and will never meet, most of whom use words or sentences that don't even make sense!
It can be extremely frustrating; how can a language that you know and speak so well every day POSSIBLY be so DIFFICULT to learn about?
The answer to this question is simple, and it is NOT because other students are smarter than you! Some students have a hard time getting what they need from a lesson in a large classroom because one teacher has to divert their attention between 30+ students. On top of that, there are other problems, such as students not paying attention, goofing off, or the one the teachers REALLY hate, sleeping in class. So, you might ask, "Where do I fit in? What about the extra help that I need?"
That's where I come in! My name is Erich, and I'm a 24-year old college graduate of California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts in English. I have studied every part of the English language from vocabulary to contemporary British Literature, and I have earned my California Secondary Education Teaching Credential, allowing me to teach English at the high school level, currently employed as a Substitute Teacher for the local Chaffey Joint Union High School District, encompassing our local Alta Loma, Etiwanda, Los Osos, and Rancho Cucamonga High Schools, as well as several others.
Having already had a full year of substitute teaching in all levels of high school classrooms, as well as a two-month long-term English position, I have experience in helping students manage their in-class time and their at home time, and learn that English isn't as difficult to learn as it might seem; sometimes we just need a little extra help.
If you are seeking tutoring in English, and you need help with...
- Writing/Proofreading an Essay
- Understanding difficult/confusing Reading
- Proper grammar/format for Writing or Speaking
- Preparing an in-class Speech or Presentation
- Learning how to use Microsoft Word or PowerPoint
- Being better prepared for class
...I CAN HELP!
I can offer simple, down-to-earth advice (thankfully without overly harsh criticism or insults to your character) in terms that are easy to understand, and am willing to break down the tasks of reading and writing into their step-by-step process. I have a vast amount of experience in writing and grading essays, checking for understanding in reading, and giving students helpful tips to better prepare them for future writing/reading assignments, as well as being prepared for class.
My students in the past have said that they "enjoy the way that I go through reading one part at a time, and then explain it so it makes sense" and "break down writing step-by-step". I will not "talk over your head" or try to make myself seem smarter than I really am; I will be patient and attentive to detail, doing my best to help you succeed with as little help as possible, so that you realize that you ARE capable of success!
I can help with fractions, decimals, equations, solving for a variable, graphing, distribution of terms, radical numbers (square roots), negative numbers in all operations, area/volume of 2- and 3-dimensional shapes, factoring, Pythagorean theorem, and showing work without skipping steps.
In addition, I have many other helpful hints, such as making multiplication/division quicker, and have lots of experience with making things "make sense" through simpler explanations, or through "saying it in simple words".
As a substitute teacher for the Chaffey Joint union High School District, I have already taken and passed the CBEST exam, and am familiar with its contents.
I can recall specific question details for all of the sections, including the Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Mathematics sections.
Some of these include writing prompts for the Writing section, types of questions asked for the Reading Comprehension section, and questions asked for the Mathematics section.
Finally, I also possess content knowledge for all of the Mathematics that were covered on the exam, and understand the mechanics of writing that is necessary for the exam, as well as the grammar that is used to make corrections in the reading comprehension section.
I have lots of experience with frequently-covered Elementary Math subjects, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals, fractions, and monetary problems (such as calculating change, adding coins, etc).
In addition, I have multiple tutoring experiences with Algebra 1 and Pre-Algebra, so I can be of assistance with the transition from Elementary Math to the beginnings of Jr. High and High School level mathematics, as well.
I have completed my English Bachelor of Arts from Cal State Fullerton, and have a great deal of experience in both personal writing assignments and in assisting others with writing and proofreading essays, reports, and other writing and grammar issues.
In addition, during my time at CSUF, I studied a decent amount of Linguistics, so I understand the way the English language works, and have spent a year student teaching and grading 9th, 11th, and 12th grade English classes' writing and grammar.
I am experienced in calculating area, diameter, radius, and circumference of circles, as well as using the equation of a circle to graph and identify midpoints and points on the circle.
In addition, I am familiar with polygon and their traits, such as angle measurements, total angle degree measurements, graphing, translations, etc.
I am fully competent with Pythagorean Theorem and the various rules for angles such as supplementary and convergent angles, and many other Geometry practices.
I have completed my English Bachelor of Arts from Cal State Fullerton, and have a great deal of experience in dealing with several authors and many different literary works, and also with college-approved strategies for annotating and summarizing important information within the text.
I am extremely familiar with Microsoft Word, including changing fonts and font sizes, adjusting spacing and margins, highlighting and adding color to documents, importing photos and making tables, and many other functions.
I have a great deal of experience with all of the basic mathematical situations, including addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of multiple-digit numbers, multiplication, division, and exponents of negative numbers, order of operations (PEMDAS), radical numbers such as square roots, and finding area and volume of two and three dimensional shapes. In addition, I am well-versed in the factoring, solving, and graphing of linear and quadratic equations, calculating slope and x-axis/y-axis intercepts, and the Pythagorean Theorem.
I can teach you the basics of conversational Spanish, starting with common phrases, vocabulary, and words to remember, and then progress, one step at a time, into proper conjugation of verbs, more advanced vocabulary, and different tenses. I am willing to progress at whatever pace is necessary, but I assure you that I will teach you as much as I know if you're willing to learn!
Of course, speaking basic Spanish is only part of the language, and I am also familiar with proper spelling, proper differentiation between formal/informal Spanish, male/female nouns, and much more!
As a certified Secondary Education teacher for California, I have undergone specific training for both a pedagogy that emphasizes organization, as well as an array or studying methods for students of various levels, having instructed mainstream, honors-level, and both special education and 504-plan students in an actual classroom environment. Strategies I have used include various forms of scaffolding (presenting new information with just enough information to allow the students to grasp the concept on their own), carefully directed note-taking and organization of materials, and insight into one's particular learning style (whether the student focuses better in a quiet environment, or with mild background noise, with image-oriented instruction, with lecture-based instruction, with discussions as a student-centered means of instruction, etc.) Understanding these concepts and managing them effectively are key components of a professional, and having completed my credential program, I am well-versed in the area.
