My name s Yelena. I can tutor you or your child in various areas of math from elementary to Calculus. I love what I do and am very good at it. I have a MS degree from San Diego State University in Civil and Environmental Engineering and valid California Emergency Teaching Credentials. Previously, I have coached a math competition team in a middle school and also taught pre-algebra at a private school. I have worked and am working with many elementary/ middle/ high school students, as well as adults. I enjoy working with students of all abilities and helping them achieve a better understanding of both, the subjects and their applications.
Algebra 1 can be quite tricky for many students. It is so very different from the math they are used to up to this point. But that is also what makes it such a great subject to teach. My favorite part of tutoring students in math and specifically in algebra is seeing that little light in their eyes that announces: "I get it now!"
Algebra 2 can be increasingly and sometimes frustratingly more difficult that Algebra 1. Even the students that breezed through Algebra 1 can get stumbled in Algebra 2 concepts just because there are so many things that have to come together in their brains before they can master it. I enjoy the challenge of "getting all their ducks in the row" so to speak, so that they can then proceed to glide through the concepts rather than stumble and get frustrated.
I love math. I love it's perfect logic. I love that it does not allow for any loose ends. I especially love that math is used in every day things, be it carpentry or engineering, cooking or sewing, playing strategy games or building legos. But most of all I love seeing children's faces light up with understanding that math is not some useless and boring "thing" they have to endure, but a useful tool that they can use any time they want to.
Geometry is a breeze for some students and a headache for others. Just because you did great in algebra, does not at all guarantee that will do well in geometry. True, you still use concepts you learned in algebra, but there is so much new terminology to learn and things to visualize. And then there are those pesky proofs! But here is the good news: geometry is not as scary as it sounds. With a little extra reinforcement and review it can be very manageable and even fun!
I have taught prealgebra in a classroom and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is the point when the kids can really start sinking their teeth into some pretty complex math problems and seeing how you can use their skills to do some important things. They also get introduced to the very basic concepts of algebra and that is where they can get a bit frustrated. However, I found that with a little patience, creativity, and humor, even the students that deemed themselves "prealgebra hopeless" can be turned into the ones that enjoy the challenge.
I think of precalculus as advanced algebra with little snippets of baby-calculus tucked here and there plus trigonometry. By this time the students are expected to be very comfortable with their algebra concepts and that is where it can get difficult if one or more of those concepts are not understood completely. This is where a tutor can be of help. I enjoy the challenge of finding these shortcomings and correcting them. Usually students find that once these are taken care of, they are free to soar.
Oh the wonderfully weird trig! So mind boggling and tricky. What makes it challenging is the fact that it is so different from algebra and geometry and yet the students have to use all of their knowledge they have from those subjects to succeed in trigonometry. Students sometimes can have a hard time recognizing algebra in trig and therefore get confused. My job as a tutor is to get them to recognize that relationship, to be able to understand the similarities and differences, and to see the great scope of applications that trigonometry offers
Very honest and conscientious tutor — Yelena is a very experienced and hard-working tutor. She is true to her profession and visibly enjoys helping children to understand and love mathematics. Yelena assessed our child’s needs very thoroughly. Yelena did not invent problems and needs in order to get more tutoring hours but rather thoughtfully assessed our child’s high and low areas. She patiently approaches every problem our child fac ...
