Hi, I am a special education teacher certified both in California and Arizona. I have taught 24 years in special education in many different areas such as autism, learning disabilities, and behavior difficulties. I also have taught regular education and have been an inclusion specialist to help teachers, aides and students transition into regular education classes. I have taken the last few years off of full-time teaching and am substituting so that I can be more available for my seven and 10 year old children. My son is on the spectrum, and I know how difficult it is to work with your own children on goals. It is emotionally exhausting! I can work with students on many different things besides classroom work. I have experience in OT, social/pragmatic skills, adaptive PE, augmentative communication, daily living skills, and independent skills. I also am willing to work on goals that include going out into the public and behaving appropriately. I did not order a background check, because I have already had one to get a teacher's credential in California.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Many students in my special education classes and regular education classes have ADD or ADHD. I am experienced in working with these students and providing the modifications and accommodations they may need to understand and reach their goals. My son also is diagnosed with ADHD and Aspergers so I am well aware of the challenges.

Aspergers

I have been teaching children with autism/aspergers for many years. I understand the challenges kids with Aspergers have and how to incorporate their interests into work that needs to be done. I have been through this with my son who is 10 and is diagnosed with Aspergers also. I'm experienced in social skills, behavioral, pragmatics, and sensory and OT difficulties these kids have and work well with them to make it enjoyable and interesting.

Autism

I have been trained in all areas of autism and have been an autism specialist in Northern California. I have worked as a self-contained, inclusionary and transition teacher for students with autism at all age levels. I'm experienced in OT, speech, augmentation devices if necessary and behavioral goals. I've also been trained in ABA, TEAACH, and many other autism methods of teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a teaching credential in both elementary education and special education. I have mostly taught special education but am familiar with the regular education curriculum as I have many of my students in inclusion in regular education. I am experienced with many different learning modalities and methods to use your child's strengths to overcome their weaknesses. I am most familiar with regular education curriculum K-5, but am willing to look at older if that is what you are looking for.

Handwriting

I have worked with many students on handwriting and have been trained in the curriculum Handwriting Without Tears. I also have worked with students who have OT difficulties in finding ways to better write legibly.

Phonics

I have worked with students on phonics using the Wilson Program, Fundation program, Starfall phonics, SRA, and Read Well.

Special Needs

I have worked in the area of specials needs for 24 years. I've worked with severely impacted kids, kids with behavioral challenges, autism, aspergers, and medically fragile students. I have worked together with Occupational therapists, speech, adaptive PE, nurses, physical and behavior interventionists.

Study Skills

I have experience working with students and study skills. I work on organization, motivation, task completion, time management, test taking, task analysis, scheduling, stress management, and environment. I have worked with kids with all different learning styles and incorporate their style to the assignments.
