Hello! My name is Dr. James C., and I have been teaching chemistry for over 20 years having started in high school! I was a tutor in chemistry for adults in high school. I was a tutor in chemistry and biology for students at The University of Chicago while I was a student there myself. I was a tutor in biology and chemistry while I was a graduate student as well. After earning my Ph.D. in chemistry in 2001 I went to The Scripps Research Institute to do more research. After two years in my post-doc I started working as a teacher in the San Diego Community College District. I am now a teacher in the chemistry department of a local community college, and have been teaching now for 6 years.

My main philosophy is to teach through discussion and the Socratic method. When a student is having difficulty with a particular aspect of the material I like to ask them questions not only so that I can better understand their confusion, but also so that I can lead them to discover the ideas and concepts and answers! It is very exciting to see students "get" the material and come to an understanding they didn't have before. Depending on the situation I may use models to illustrate a point. I may quiz the student to make sure they understand the previous material or the material that we just went over. I'm very interactive. So a student will need to come prepared to interact with me through dialog.

Algebra 1

I excel in Algebra and have much experience with learning and teaching this subject. My education has required that I take and perform well in Algebra 1. There is nothing in algebra 1 that I do not understand and cannot teach.

Algebra 2

I have a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago (the Harvard of the Midwest). I have a M.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego. My algebra 2 skills are superb and I will be able to teach your children how to perform well in this area.

Biology

I am a college professor whose degrees are in biochemistry and chemistry. Throughout my career as a tutor I have taught both biology and chemistry. While my expertise is in chemistry my skills in teaching biology are not far behind. I have the utmost confidence that I can get your student to understand these complex concepts in biology.

Chemistry

I have been teaching this material professionally now for 8 years at the college level. This course would entail the first two semesters of chemistry that you would take while in college or the first year of chemistry in high school. Grammar

I absolutely loved learning grammar when I was in grade school, and have used it my whole life making sure that I use it correctly. Whether it is for writing college papers, publishing papers in scientific journals, or correcting others' papers it is something that I take seriously and enjoy. As a professional teacher I still get on my students about their grammar. I am absolutely sure that I can teach your children how to appreciate grammar and use it correctly.

Physics

At the University of Chicago (the Harvard of the Midwest), I took every honors physics class that they offered and did extremely well. I love physics and still help some students with physics when they ask for it. I am definitely able to tutor physics and am very good at it. Sometimes I wonder if I should have been a physicist.

Prealgebra

There is nothing in prealgebra that I do not understand or cannot teach. I am confident that I can teach your child what they need to know and how to do better in this subject.

Physical Science

I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry and I have been studying science my whole life. My knowledge of the material is quite broad and I have been teaching science professionally for 6 years, but I have been teaching informally as a tutor for 20+ years in many various areas in science.
