For the past several years, I have been ranked in the top percentage of Wyzant tutors nationwide. I work hard to help my students experience the feeling of accomplishment that comes from tackling something they find difficult. My degree and professional background before teaching were in biotechnology. Because of my scientific background, I have a special passion for math and science, but neither of these subjects comes easily if reading and study skills are weak. I made it through lots and lots of science, math, and report writing. I know what it means to work and study hard. I also know that with proper and patient instruction, you can make sense of it too. If you're ready to get started on your path toward being a stronger and smarter student, then I am ready to help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. It is so logical and sequential! Every lesson builds directly on the last. It is also one of the most often requested, as it is the first time students leave behind the world of arithmetic and enter the world of symbols and formulas. Confidence in Algebra is the gateway to all the rest of the advanced math classes!

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST on my first attempt. The math on this exam is no more difficult than the basic algebra and geometry learned in high school, which I tutor extensively. The English section covers basic reading comprehension and writing conventions. I also was employed as a public school classroom assistant for 6 years.

College Counseling

I managed two successful college placements for my own children during a time that our family had a severely restricted budget due to unemployment. During this time, I developed a knowledge of the process not achieved by most parents. Over the years since then, I have acted as a college selection and application consultant and guide for family members, friends and tutoring clients. This has involved tailoring the search to the unique talents, qualities, goals, and financial requirements of each student, then managing the application process, scholarship and financial aid applications, and monitoring standardized test requirements all while meeting multiple deadlines.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked for 6 years as an instructional aide, working in classrooms with elementary aged students. My role was to assist the classroom teacher with all subjects taught in grades 1-5. This involved facilitating small group and individual instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and math. I spent two years as a math content intervention specialist, working with small groups of students who were struggling to master the classroom material.

Geometry

Mastering Geometry depends on a solid foundation in Algebra. Often times, if students are struggling, it is because they can't "see" how the algebra can help them describe the geometric relationships. But this is no reason to fear! I use Geometry lessons to give students a chance to re-learn and practice their Algebra in practical problem solving, and be stronger students when they tackle Algebra II.

Prealgebra

The focus of pre-algebra is to use arithmetic to show different ways to express parts of a whole. It covers fractions, decimals, percents and probability. These are the skills students need to be able to break the parts of Algebraic expressions into workable pieces later on. These practical skills are used in our every day lives when we shop for sales, calculate our car's mileage, figure out how much interest our accounts are earning, and in many other situations. I like to use these kind of examples to help students appreciate the answer to the question, "When will I ever need to do this?".
