After graduating from college with a major in English, which includes both Literature and language basics (spelling, grammar, vocabulary), I began a 36 year long teaching career. During that time I added both Spanish and Reading to my credential. Along the way I also added ESL (now called ELD) to my credential.
Among the real joys for me is taking a student who is struggling up to a comfort level with the subject. Another real joy is, of course, taking students to a level of excelling.
I love the one on one contact with students, as that enables me to know the student and his/her learning style. It is this that enables me to be of real assistance.
My proudest moment was one year when I received invitations to a high school graduation. What made it so wonderful was that I had taught in a middle school continuation setting, which meant every one of my students was behind in every subject and was at risk of dropping out of school at the early possible moment. Every one of those students sent me an invitation, letting me know that if it weren't for my patience and insistence that they learn, there would have been no high school graduation for them. Laura is erudite in knowledge of English grammar and essay writing (structure). English is not my first language, but she was very patient explaining my mistakes. Although my essays "bled ink", her experience and knowledge helped me improve tremendously.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent many years teaching students who were years behind in reading how to read. My preferred method was using phonics, as these students could not identify sounds, therefore they could not deduce what many words were. As my basis, I used my own knowledge of phonics as well as the technique I had been taught while an undergraduate student majoring in English. I had been required, during that time, to take a phonics/grammar/spelling course.
As an undergraduate student, I took many courses in the Social Sciences. Among them were extensive courses in Sociology, which I eventually turned into a minor. My California teaching credential lists Sociology as one of my minors.
One of the subjects I taught over my 36 year teaching career was study skills. It became apparent to me that students did not know how to organize and/or study; thus I established time within my classroom to teach students how to prepare for studying and how to organize their time. As a result, I saw my students' test scores improve drastically.
