I have my MA in teaching English and Spanish from the Hertzen Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. However, as my family immigrated from Russia in 1987 before the fall of the Soviet Union, I have been teaching Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey for more than 26 years.
I am a full professor, and I have an extensive teaching experience that ranges from teaching the DLI nine months long Russian basic course, to intermediate, advanced, and all the way to highly sophisticated translation / interpretation courses for the US military. I am a certified Oral Proficiency Tester, Diagnostic Assessment specialist, Teacher trainer, and on-line developer.
For the last nine years I have been working remotely from my home in Pomona as Academic Specialist for the online program GLOSS (Global Language Online Support System). I teach teachers how to develop on-line lessons, I review lessons created by others, and I develop my own lessons in Russian for all levels of proficiency.
I have a rather unique combination of skills that allows me to diagnose the student's skills, to do needs analysis, and to develop a teaching plan catering to the specific needs of every student.
I have always been able to keep up the students' interest by engaging them in a variety of activities based on real life situations and exploring authentic contemporary materials. As culture and language are inseparable, expect to learn a lot about Russia, its history, traditions and people.
If you are serious about learning Russian you are in for an exciting journey!
