I would love to help those struggling with English as well as those who want to learn and understand the Chinese language and culture! I am patient and flexible.
For Adults:
I have over 50 hours experience of tutoring adults in ESL and Mandarin Chinese.
I taught English for 2 years at the Yunnan University of Finance and Economics in China.
I can provide individual or corporate training for those who frequently do business with China.
I can customize a very useful orientation to individuals or groups in advance of meetings with Chinese people or government officials.
For Kids:
I have a good rapport with kids and know how to make learning fun! I am currently a Professional Mandarin Chinese instructor for all grade levels at a top-rated public charter school. I have previous experience working as a Chinese instructor at a Pleasanton-based after school program and would be a great asset to your child's education journey or home school co-op!
Here's what makes me different from your typical Chinese and ESL teacher:
I lived in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2000 and Kunming, China from 2000 to 2009, so I understand the difficulties of living in a different culture as well as learning a new language. It took years to understand the intricacies of Chinese culture, history and geography (including insights into geographic variations in accent and culture). There is an advantage to my insights and expertise, sometimes even over a native Chinese speaker, because I have the experience and perspective of dealing with Chinese people (including Chinese officials) as a non-Chinese person, so I can understand cultural situations and know how to resolve misunderstandings on BOTH sides.
While in China, this is what I accomplished:
- Provided teaching sessions on a regular basis (about once a month) for visiting groups who came to China from around the world.
- Helped locals in China set up their own businesses which focused on orienting Westerners to China and teaching them language/culture lessons. I created the curricula and trained the Chinese friends how to do these orientations for Westerners.
- My wife and I adopted a Chinese son while in China, and, through the process, had to do all the complicated paperwork and negotiations with the Chinese officials entirely in Chinese language.
- Developed training materials, including customizable booklets to help visitors to China get around successfully.
I have openings in the evening after 6:00pm and some Saturdays are available too. I will have special hours from July 19 through August 16 where I will be available during the days as well.
