ACT English

I look forward to helping you prepare for this test. We'll have fun with it.

English

Generally speaking, "English" refers to reading, writing, analysis and research. I can help you with any of these.

Literature

As a poet, I've always loved literature. I can help you in your close reading and interpreting of texts.

Proofreading

"Proofreading" is an essential part of the writing process. Too few people actually take this step seriously. I can help you to learn some strategies to improve your proofreading skills, markedly improving the overall quality of your academic writing.

I can also help you to proofread larger creative projects (film scripts, novels, poems, etc.).

Reading

Reading is an essential part of improving your skills as a writer. I can help you to become a more careful reader, showing you strategies (i.e., keeping a reading log and annotating your texts) that together will serve to make reading more interesting and fun.

Vocabulary

Having an extensive and "fancy" vocabulary is not in any way necessary in our daily lives, but having a more precise vocabulary can help you to improve the overall quality of your writing, helping you to more successfully get your point across to your audiences as they begin to take you more seriously. Expanding your vocabulary is intimately linked to active reading strategies that I can show you.

Writing

Many people think of writing as something they're simply not cut out for, some sort of mystical craft beyond their reach. This isn't true. In fact, you already can write; but you can improve if you really want to do so. You just need to put in the time, all the while learning some important strategies that I can show you as you come to see how reading, writing and thinking are all inextricably linked.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
