CBEST

I am a recent teaching credential candidate and have been a high school substitute teacher and English tutor while studying.

I tutor students on the English Language Arts segment of the SAT, and have tutored on the civil service exam, as well. Both exams are very similar to the CBEST, and, as substitute teacher, I have had to pass the CBEST so I am very familiar with what is on the test.

College Counseling

As a high school substitute teacher and recent teaching credential graduate, I have tutored high school and community college students on the importance of a stellar personal statement, focusing on the ultimate goal and not immediate roadblocks, how to approach the college experience with regard to appropriate study habits for college, and how to take intellectual advantage of every course taken, even those courses not in the major subject area.

English

I can tutor all aspects of English Language arts including grammar, punctuation, essay writing, proofreading, editing, formatting, reading and comprehension.

ESL/ESOL

I am an English major and teaching credential candidate who has had coursework in ESL. I have also volunteered for Opportunity Junction's adult ESL workshops that provided written and conversational support for intermediate level ESL adults.

I offered vocabulary worksheets, short essay assignments and everyday language usage in conversation.

Film

As a lifelong aficionado of movies, both American and European, I am well-versed in the cinematic styles of great directors such as John Ford, Elia Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Francois Truffaut to name a few. I am well-acquainted with various film genres - noir, western, musical, drama, melodrama, comedy, action - and their historical context through the decades.

I also studied film during my undergraduate studies in English at university, and I use the same principles of literary criticism with film.

GED

This study regime is very similar to California Basic Education Skills Test and requires the same working knowledge of math, reading, comprehension and essay writing.

First, it is important to understand what the prompt is requiring the test-taker to answer, then peruse the parts of the question, whether in math, reading or writing, to ascertain the direction for the answer.

In addition, outlining of the keys to solving basic math or elements of writing a good essay are implemented.

Grammar

I structure grammar tutoring as follows:
~ Review of current knowledge in grammar - parts of speech and their function
~ Review of basic sentence structure and function of parts of speech

Each subsequent session includes:
~ Review of what was learned
~ Introduction at least two new terms, their function and usage in a sentence
~ Application of newly acquired terms to business or school work

Literature

The elements that make good literature: plot, character, setting, mood and literary devices are discussed. In addition, how to analyze and interpret these elements for greater understanding of the meaning of the poem, story or essay and its socio-political importance as a literary work.

In the course of discussion, prominent classical as well as contemporary authors and their works from various literary periods are examined.

Proofreading

Proofreading symbols and tips on how to successfully proof one's own or another's work are discussed.

Infallible methods for catching typographical errors that are not caught with computerized spell-check, such as "from" and "form", "to" "too" and "two" etc.

Public Speaking

I have taken speech classes in college, and I use public speaking skills in everyday work as a substitute teacher and as a recent student teacher (now graduate of the credential program at Brandman University).

I understand the various rhetorical styles and tutor high school and college students in practice for class presentations.

Reading

Major literary works, in entirety or excerpted, will be discussed that are appropriate to current grade level reading and comprehension with the goal of improving reading to desired grade level.

Reading silently and reading aloud will be implemented, for understanding of various literary styles and the use of literary devices such as assonance, consonance, iambic pentameter and onomatopoeia.

SAT Reading

Reading for comprehension is comprised of finding and focusing on the thesis of the story or article, recognizing the main supporting examples and defining what is the appropriate conclusion.

Reading for analysis of literary style and socio-political importance is comprised of recognizing the literary elements such as plot, character or setting etc.,and the literary devices such as irony, metaphor, tone, point of view etc.

SAT Writing

The keys to effective essay writing are to understand the directives given in the prompt, a strong thesis, equally strong supporting information and a conclusion that has insight and a flourish.

The ability to outline is important in organizing thoughts and using appropriate transitional words in keeping a cohesive structure to the work. Avoiding "pitfall" phrases will ensure your writing shines.

Spelling

For higher level spelling application, vocabulary words are supplied relative to current courses of study or enrichment. The vocabulary words are defined in terms of etymology, grammatical usage, and meaning. Then the word is written in a sentence.
At next meeting a word bank is comprised of previous vocabulary words in which the appropriate word is used in pre-prepared sentences and/or matched to its definition.

Also, review of phonics, linguistic structure of words and spelling strategies where applicable.

Study Skills

As a peer tutor during college, I emphasized time management as a priority assignment, concentrated on reading and comprehension of the lesson objective and appropriate note-taking either as an outline, flashcards or Cornell notes.

I differentiated my tutoring style to accommodate any learning challenges (such as ADHD or dyslexia) and used scaffolding whenever appropriate for the lesson.

As a high school substitute teacher, I employ one or more of these study habits every day with students.

Writing

As a college graduate with my B.A. in English, I am well-versed in the essentials of good writing which include a strong thesis, a point of view, grammatically correct phrases and a dynamic conclusion.

Education

Cal State University, Hayward (English)

BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY (Graduate Coursework)

Best Tutor Ever Doreen takes her job very seriously. She is a very well-rounded tutor, the best one I have ever had. I needed to write an essay that was worth 50% of my grade and the instructor was a very hard grader so I asked Doreen for help. I sent her all the class notes, she read them all, and then I gave her a sloppy copy of my essay and she helped organize all my thoughts and helped me clean up my paper. ...
