Don't let the word "professional" give you the impression that I don't understand how hard it is to write and to read comprehensively, no matter what your age! I recently returned to California from substitute teaching in Georgia's elementary, middle, and high schools (English/language arts), as well teaching at the University of Georgia. I recently passed my GACE exams in English, reading comprehension and writing and will soon be taking the C-Best exam. It is because I am a professional writer, and have experience writing and teaching in all genres--from every type of essay to dissertation work, from prose to playwriting--that I know JUST how difficult and daunting that blank page can be. I have taught English composition and creative writing to high school seniors in California. When I taught at the University of Georgia, and when I tutor students of all ages, I always begin by letting him or her know that it is the "student" who is the prime authority on what he or she is writing. Yes, the student may of course need to do research on a particular subject or topic, but after the research is done, it is through the process of writing that the student will discover his or her feelings and thoughts and beliefs about whatever it is they are writing. This is true for any student, no matter their age. Writing is an exploration, and it can be a fascinating one. Not only can I help a student to her or his grade in a particular course, but I can also help that same student learn more about "themselves." I can help that same student value his or her opinions on a wide spectrum of topics and subjects. If it is creative writing, I can help the student develop his or her own unique "writer's voice." I have acted as guide and dramaturg for over five hundred playwriting/screenwriting students at the University of Georgia.

I also tutor in American history, one of my passions. I continually read and watch documentary material to continue my education in this subject.

As a theatre professional, I can also help with a student's presentation of his/her work. I can help individuals open up opportunities within a career they have already chosen and are employed in, through developing a sense of confidence and, yes, "enjoyment!" in speaking in front of the public. I know, too, how daunting that can be. Think of me as your private mentor, guide, and cheerleader. I believe it is through the affirmation of the talents that each of us possess that we fulfill our greatest potential. That is my philosophy of tutoring and mentoring.

ACT English

I am proficient in the English portions of the ACT exam and have experience tutoring students in sample tests, and in helping them in their reading comprehension and analysis.

American History

I have a great passion for history, particularly North and South American history, and European history, as well as that of Europe, India, and Africa. As a Ph.D. I have extensive experience in researching a variety of subjects, and pass those research tools to my students.

Ballet

I studied classical ballet for over ten years, performed in a professional dance company until a broken foot ended my professional career. I have continued to take class throughout my life, and have taught ballet to children 8-10 years old. My dissertation was on the legendary Russian ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky, and his ballet, L'Apres-midi d'un Faune (Afternoon of a Faun). I am a Nijinsky scholar. Other specialties include 19th century ballet, 20th century ballet, and Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

College Counseling

Not only do I have personal experience at applying for, and being accepted to, both an MFA and Ph.D program, but I have helped my niece as well as students at the University of Georgia write effective individual mission statements that have showcased her or his unique qualifications for a particular college or university department. I have extensive experience in creating and editing resumes. In addition, I have also guided students through the process of requesting and submitting academic transcripts as well as asking for and making sure letters of recommendation are sent on time and creating a timeline to ensure their application packets are received by the college or university of their choice.

English

As a professional writer, and as an English and Theatre professor, I am experienced in mentoring students in essay writing (of all types and for all grades), creative writing, reading for comprehension, and literature analysis. I am passionate about these subjects, and I think I communicate this excitement to my students. I also believe in the "affirmative" approach to mentoring and teaching -- that encouragement of the student to find their own "writer's voice" is a way not only for the student to do well in school but to help explore the way they think and feel about the world.

Film

I attended the Motion Picture Department of UCLA and have had several screenplays optioned. I have recently adapted my award-winning play, Who Loves You, Jimmie Orrio? for the screen. My agent in New York City is currently marketing this screenplay. I have extensive knowledge of the history of cinema, from the silent film era to the present. I continued to take film classes during my doctoral course work at the University of Georgia from 2003-2007.

Grammar

As a professional writer and professor of English Composition, I can incorporate correct grammar usage within improving a student's writing skills. The student then can see how correct grammar helps him or her to better communicate their thoughts and feelings, rather than having grammar as a separate skill, which seems to have no relevance to the student.

Literature

My B.A. in English emphasized British and American literature. In addition, as a playwright, I have written plays about famous British writers such as Emily Bronte, who wrote "Wuthering Heights," and have knowledge and a great love of British literature and poetry.

Praxis

GACE is the Georgia equivalent of the Praxis certifiation tests. I recently passed the GACE exams in English I and English II. I am very qualified to tutor an individual wishing to pass either GACE or Praxis exams in English.

Proofreading

I have over ten years experience as a professional proofreader, besides my experience as a professional writer and editor.

Public Speaking

I have a background as a professional performer, dancer, and actress. My most recent performance on stage was in 2008 at the University of Georgia in the role of Clytemnestra in Euripides' Iphigenia at Aulis. I have experience performing Shakespeare, including Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream. I have also taught acting in Theatre Appreciation classes at the University of Georgia. I have experience coaching actors and non-actors in plays, dramatic presentations, monologues, and speeches. Combined with my experience as a professor who is used to lecturing 120-plus students, I am able to help an individual learn how to vocally and physically present themselves to their greatest advantage, whatever the goal -- an audition, a job interview, or a conference speech.

Reading

I have tutored students from grades 2-12 in reading comprehension and vocabulary. I believe patience and focusing on the positive--allowing the student to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in reading--brings wonderful results and opens up an exciting, challenging world to the student, whatever age!

SAT Reading

I am highly experienced in both SAT and GRE reading tests. I have taught Critical Thinking and Critical Reading for Comprehension and am a professional writer and editor. All that means that I can help you enormously to prepare for your SAT Reading test!

SAT Writing

I have not only taken and achieved extremely high marks in the Vocabulary and Writing portions of the SAT, I have taken the exam at various points in my academic career, so I am familiar with recent developments in the test. I have also tutored students in taking multiple choice exams, ways of narrowing the answer to the one that has the closest chance of being correct, and how to quickly organize thoughts into a strong thesis statement statement with supporting arguments for the Writing section.

Study Skills

I have, within my tutoring experience, guided students in not only the organization and prioritizing of an individual essay, but of larger academic projects, i.e. a portfolio for a class presentation, and gathering, writing and sending out a college application. My doctoral course work was a "study" in Study Skills, culminating in the research, organization, prioritization and deadline-keeping for my 300-page doctoral dissertation. I can also help a student schedule and prioritize her or his daily homework.

Theatre

I am a professional playwright whose play, Who Loves You, Jimmie Orrio? won the PEN USA Award for Drama and is published by Dramatic Publishing. I have an MFA in Playwriting, as well as a Ph.D. in Theatre. My knowledge of theatre is expansive, including the history of theatre and performance, script analysis, playwriting, theatre appreciation (how an individual gains access as an audience member to the experience of theatre), improvisational theatre, acting (including Stanislavski and Michael Chekhov's principles of acting instruction), and directing.

Writing

I have a B.A. in English, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and a Ph.D. in Theatre, all of which have combined in years of experience in teaching English Composition (all genres of essay writing), and Creative Writing. I have worked as a professional editor and proofreader. Most especially, I have great passion for teaching writing, and a very gentle, supportive and affirmative approach to students.
