I am a Ph.D. teaching professional with an interest in life long learning and a background in humanistic education. This includes history, literature, psychology, philosophy, and social sciences. The study of these subjects develops critical thinking skills, which are valuable in all types of careers. My students ages range from 14 to 60.
To develop skills in thinking, speaking, and writing about humanistic subjects, one must practice all three. My approach is conversational. I ask questions and develop a dialogue with clients. Then I ask them to compare and contrast themes and organize their thoughts in outline form to develop a simple but descriptive essays. I encourage independent thinking.
My personal philosophy includes the following concepts: education is a social enterprise, studies of humanities offer the student the opportunity to develop a personal perspective of how s/he may contribute to society, and learning is best accomplished through exploring one's own perceptions of the subject matter. My role as a tutor is one of a mentor and a guide in this process.
