ART - My love of art was rooted in early childhood, carried me through 4 years of Art School and is alive and well in my senior years as I joyfully tutor art students in painting, drawing, sketch-book journaling, candlemaking, batik, printmaking, collage, calligraphy, puppets, and wild combinations - any age, any setting, any project - just ask! We can do it together.

STORYTELLING - I am a professional storytelling coach with background and experience in teaching children this oral narrative art. This is done with fun tools and interactive games. Telling to live audiences is part of the curriculum. I hold a Certificate in Storytelling from Dominican University.

PUBLIC SPEAKING - I can help put you at ease by making public speaking fun through storytelling and theater games. Coaching can include preparation for a special event, a leadership/teaching role or any setting where self-confidence is needed. The main focus will be support for natural presence and ease as you speak. I have experience as a Speaking Circle facilitator (as taught by Lee Glickstein) and as a youth storytelling coach.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I am a 4-year graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and have taught children's art at the Honolulu Academy of Art, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, Boys and Girls Club art director and arts-based summer camp director. I teach sketching with different mediums such as pencil, charcoal, oil pastels, colored pencils/pens, etc. The subject matter can vary from portraits, nature, animals, landscape and still life. Illustrated journals and sketch-diaries are my favorites.

Painting

I am a graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and have taught children's art classes at the Honolulu Academy of Art, at summer camps and Boys and Girls Club. We experience/explore a variety of mediums while painting nature, animals, people, etc. One of my favorites is to copy the painting styles of the different masters such as Matisse, Picasso, Monet, Van Gough and others. Color study, the use of shadows, perspective, anatomy, the care and use of various tools... and all based on where the student wants to go with it.

Public Speaking

I am a graduate of Dominican University's "Certificate in Storytelling" program. I have also been a certified "Speaking Circle" facilitator, studying with Lee Glickstein in the art of coaching public speaking. I have started and facilitated after-school youth storytelling clubs, coaching elementary students in public speaking through the art of storytelling. The curriculum is designed to include activities and games that make natural presence in front of an audience easy and fun. Shy people are encouraged to apply.
