Hi there! My name is Ian, and I graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Psychology. I've been tutoring various subjects since 2007, and I've particularly enjoyed helping high school students improve their test taking skills ahead of applying to colleges and universities. I also specialize in college counseling and advising on college applications. As a fairly recent graduate, I'm proud of my ability to connect with my students on a more personal level to make sure that they're getting the most out of their sessions. Additionally, having founded and served as a director of development for a non-profit organization in South Africa (The African Sports & Scholastic Initiative for Students in Townships - the ASSIST) that focuses on balancing academics with athletics, I do my very best to encourage my students to have broad interests in order to become well-rounded members of their communities. During that time, I served as an alumni interviewer for Harvard University admissions as well, and learned a bit more about the admissions mechanics for top national universities in the process.

Although I specialize in test prep and college counseling/applications, I'm more than happy to help out as a general subject tutor for students in elementary, middle, and high school. I'm currently working in the entertainment industry as a business exec, and scheduling can sometimes be hectic, but I made a profile on Wyzant because I love helping students reach their potential and achieve whatever goals they might set for themselves. If we work together, I can guarantee that you will have a very passionate, caring tutor on your side.

If you're interested at all in the services I have to offer, don't hesitate to reach out! Please do note that while my rate is negotiable, it is a fairly accurate reflection of how I value my time outside of regular working hours based on my prior experience, results with students (test score improvements and college admissions), and the genuine care and effort that I put forth for each and every one of my students. I am willing to take exceptional students at a lower rate of pay, provided that they demonstrate an excellent work ethic and passion for improvement (to be determined on a case by case basis).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I've been working in South Korea as a college counselor for 5+ years, and have successfully helped students apply and gain admission at several reputable universities (UCLA, NYU, others). Students would often forgo the ubiquitous (and expensive) "cram school" route and instead pay me an even higher rate due to my results, as well as feeling more comfortable with my 1-to-1 approach. I continue to serve as an alumni interviewer for Harvard University admissions (my alma mater).

English

English has always been one of my strongest subjects. I started editing the essays of my friends and peers in high school (while also serving as a contributing writer at the International Herald Tribune), and genuinely enjoy exploring different methods of written and spoken expression. This was a very useful skill to have cultivated when applying to colleges, as the written portions of applications tend to be a candidate's best opportunity to stand out and distinguish themselves. To this day, I set aside time to help my colleagues with their various papers and publications (academic, journalistic, etc).

PSAT

I performed well on my PSAT as a sophomore in high school, scoring 234 out of a possible 240 points. I went on to become a National Merit Scholarship Finalist the following year at my high school in Seoul, Korea. I helped many of my fellow students prepare for the exam as well.

SAT Math

I scored an 800 on my SAT I Math section as a sophomore in high school, and have helped my students improve their scores drastically over the years. Students of mine who started in the 500s and 600s were able to boost their scores into the high 700s range. With enough practice with the test format and a basic understanding of the underlying mathematical concepts, an 800 is achievable for any motivated student.

SAT Reading

Having been through the South Korean cram school system as both a student and a teacher, I've come to understand that students learn how to become better critical readers in their own way. My SAT I Reading score was a 760, which was far lower than most of my practice scores (which were rarely below 800), and I've helped many of my students eclipse that mark as well since then.

SAT Writing

Writing has always been my strongest section on the SAT, and I like to think that the rigorous but fun practice that I assign to my students has helped them become more effective, engaging writers as well. I scored an 800 on my own SAT I Writing section. I have read and graded many SAT Writing section essays, and have a good grasp on what constitutes a 12 (two 6s) from examiners.

Writing

I've always thought of writing as a truly rewarding exercise, through which a person can explore and discover a wide range of topics in a very personal manner. This belief is what led me to take on a number of internships focused on the craft from a young age. Most notably, I was accepted as a contributing writer for the International Herald Tribune (a global branch of the NY Times) as a high school student, and wrote several culture and lifestyle pieces from their office in Seoul. I've worked with many students both in the United States as well as South Korea to help them improve their grasp of the written word.
