I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (Cum Laude university honors and High Distinction Honors from the UCSD Music Department) and am currently attending the Afro-Latin Graduate Studies program at the California State University, Los Angeles. I started playing professionally at the age of sixteen and since then have studied under and/or worked with many figures in Latin music and other genres.
When teaching, my priority is to make lessons fun, challenging, and gratifying for the student. I have come to understand music as a very personal and expressive action, one that cannot take place if the student is either indifferent to the material, daunted, or worried about perfecting seemingly arbitrary motions. For this reason, I emphasize immediate utilization of instruments to learn material that can get students playing as soon as possible. In other words, my goal is to get you playing correctly as quickly as I can, so we can get past the exercises and make some music!
Above all, I want my students to know I am here to help them achieve their goals and assist them in whatever I can, the best I can. In my experience, my most influential teachers have been the ones that understood learning is a dynamic, personal process that is different for every individual, using their strengths and weaknesses to guide them in the right direction. This principle above all guides me when I work with my students and will guide us to your musical goals!
