I am not a typical teacher. Before I settled down and went to college I needed to see the world and I have never stopped. In my thirties I received a BA and in my 40s an MFA, both with the highest marks. I have extensively studied literature, anthropology, history, philosophy, drama and film. For fifteen years I taught at a private high school where I directed over twenty plays and made many short films. More than anything I want our experience together to be fun.
I made a study of how to write and teach essay writing. This has to be the driest subject ever, but I think we can make it enjoyable. The place to start is where you are. What are you good at; where are you uncomfortable? I like to begin with sentence structure and style and work up to body paragraphs. The thesis holds it all together. I prefer to sit and challenge you as you work, but I am content to help you fix your work, if that is your style. Each person is an individual and I want to get to know you.
For many years I taught writing essays for personal statements for applying to college and for the SATs. We worked on vocabulary and took practice SAT tests; we practiced analyzing those irritating paragraphs and answering their questions. If you need that kind of attention, I can help.
Lastly, I will say that I do not plan to just show up. When I know where your questions lie, I will be prepared when we meet. Teaching is a calling for me and a large part of my personality. Try me out and, if you aren't pleased, I'll give your money back.
