Hi! My name is Irving.
I studied a Bachelor in Music at the UAQ in Queretaro, Mexico, where I had classical voice training. I also took private lessons with baritone Agustin Sanchez (Choir of the State Theater, Mainz, Germany) with whom I received a combined training between classical voice and a contemporary method called Tao of Voice, based in the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, which approaches the singing technique from the perspective of being self-aware and finding balance in the different energies and functions implied for the production of voice; for example, the natural transition between loud and soft volume, high and low notes, fast and slow tempos, and connected inhale and exhale airflow. It made a big difference for me in understanding how to sing with relaxation, being aware of how our body and mind work, and allowing me to feel free to perform creatively.
Later on I had the great opportunity to come to Los Angeles, California, and study vocal performance at the LA Music Academy, where I took lessons with top music industry vocalists and artists like Tierney Sutton (4 Times nominee to the Grammys for Best Vocal Jazz), Kacee Clanton (backup singer for Joe Cocker, Luis Miguel) and Dorian Holley (Voice Director for This is It, Michael Jackson; The Tonight Show...), among others. I had an integral approach to voice technique in very diverse genres such as jazz, blues, funk, R&B, Latin, etc.
Before coming to the USA I had been already teaching voice lessons in Mexico for about 2 years, I use a mix from Tao of Voice method, classical traditional technique, and recently, after having studied in LA, contemporary singing techniques (for modern genres).
I have been active as a lead vocalist for several music groups for over 10 years and have tons of experience singing live, in all kind of music environment and venues.
From my own experience teaching, using the techniques already mentioned, I can tell that my students have a more clear, precise and realistic understanding about singing, and they learn to do it naturally and with confidence.
We will be covering singing from different angles. You will practice breathing exercises combined with psychophysical re-education for the voice and the entire body, where visualization (imagination) will play an important role. The Idea is to make singing as easy and comfortable as possible so that the student can express with freedom, joy and creativity. The repertoire seen in class will depend on the student's musical preferences hand in hand with students progress and skills.
I am also offering mentorship on sight singing and ear training. I have no particular reference or experience on teaching these classes, but those are curricular subjects I learned in my music studies, in which I got the best grades, and I had some chances to help my schoolmates understand them.
I have also basic knowledge on how to play the guitar. I know the basic chords, how to read music tabs and sheets, and have played it for a long while since I was in high school as an accompanying instrument.
And last, but not least, my mother language is Spanish, so I am offering also Spanish language tutoring, I have a very disciplined use of Spanish grammar, and my idea would be to approach this subject from the perspective of conversation. I will adapt to the needs, goals and reasons of the students for learning Spanish.
