Through all my years of teaching middle school, high school, college, and tutoring all three groups I found one single common denominator, and that is math-phobia. Most of my past students lacked the confidence, not the ability to learn math, or even to shine in math.
After a few sessions, and a test or two where they achieved a passing score and went on to higher scores, they realized their potential and no longer feared math.
Once the fear disappeared, math aptitude appeared and the rest is history.
