If it's algebra, I do it.
I was a tutor for an elementary school for a semester in 2002, working with 1st - 5th grade students on reading, writing, and math from one up to 4 or so students at a time. I used the "Who's on First?" Abbot & Costello routine for 3rd grade reading students. I asked the 5th grade writing students to write sentences starting with one word and then building one word at a time, or to describe a flower I brought in (bearded iris), among many other assignments.
I was hired as a "computer lab instructional aide" for an elementary school, beginning work in 2002, but what I really did was devise curriculum and instruct 1st - 5th grade classes, and the individual students within those classes, in such programs as Paint, Word, WordArt, Hyperstudio, PowerPoint, Excel, MicroWorlds (Logo programming), and html. I did this for 6 ½ years. I asked 4th graders to write stories for a first grade audience that were 5 - 7 (computer)pages long in Hyperstudio. Each page would have one paragraph. Each paragraph was to have 3 - 5 sentences. I, along with the classroom teacher, went around to each student checking their work, helping them correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and to make sure their words said what they wanted.
I am interested in tutoring elementary students in writing, grammar, reading, math and Spanish.
I love languages, particularly English, and look forward to helping people become comfortable in it. Tengo un poquito espanol, pero la mayoria de nuestra conversacion sera en ingles. If your native language is not Spanish, I still believe I can help you, as we should be doing nearly all of our communication in English.
I have a Lifetime, single subject, teaching credential good for Math, Life Science, and English. I have tutored ISEE previously. I think a tutor can transfer more math knowledge than vocabulary/English during a given amount of tutoring time, but will be happy to provide English help also.
My teaching credential is good for Math, which came about because I myself passed the National Teachers' Exam (NTE) in Math, which is now the PRAXIS. I have been consistently tutoring levels of math from basic through precalculus, and have taught the same.
I love languages, and may be able to help in a first course in Latin or German, as well as 1st or 2nd year high school Spanish.
The TEAS test consists of 5 parts: Reading, Math, Science, plus English and Language Usage. I have passed the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test in English Composition, and the National Teachers Exam for high level Math (I believe this has changed into the Praxis Math II 0061 Exam). I have tutored the math portion of the SAT, and both math and English on the ISEE. Beyond this, I have spent many years tutoring various aspects of math. I have also had experience in tutoring for the math section of the TEAS test.
