I'm a teacher with 10 years of experience teaching students of all ages. My specific degree is an MA in English Language and Literature, and teaching English is my great love. I started out as an English teacher for 7 - 12th grade students at a local learning center where I mainly taught all forms of writing. The high school classes were much more intensive and focused on writing about literature and the standardized essay.
For three years of my teaching career, I taught 4th grade and had a blast. My students were so eager to learn new things, and teaching all subjects was a lot of fun for me. My last year at a private school I was also the school librarian which gave me the opportunity to teach K-5 library while teaching middle school English. It was so enjoyable to foster a love of books to students of all ages, and I loved reading aloud to them! I also have experience in teaching students with Asperger's Syndrome, dysgraphia, hyperlexia, ADD, and cognitive disabilities that affect reading and writing.
For five years I was an English teacher for 6th - 8th grade, and as a private school teacher I am knowledgeable in the HSPT and ISEE tests for private high schools. At my previous school, I was the Coordinator and Analyst for all of the school's standardized testing. I've been to local, regional, and national conferences, and was one of six teachers in the country to review test questions for the 2013 6th and 7th grade ERB test. Because of this specialized knowledge, I can help students not only study for standardized tests, but I can give them insight into how questions are formulated and how best to narrow down the answer.
The best part of teaching, to me, has always been getting to know my students. The one-on-one teacher/student relationship works because the better you can know a student the more successful you can be in teaching to his/her specific needs. Students thrive in this arrangement because they have their teacher's full attention and can have questions answered quickly. Tutoring gives students the individualized learning experience not normally found in the classroom.
