Greetings!

My name is James, and I have taught at the college level for 7 years. While my educational background is in psychology, my knowledge base ranges from teaching language arts and public speaking, to career development and college success strategies. I am currently an adjunct instructor at Westwood College in Upland, as well as a career counselor at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. My work at Caltech has involved helping students to apply to graduate schools and medical schools, so I am well versed in crafting and reviewing successful applications. I love to work one-on-one with students, helping them to grasp difficult concepts, and to find meaningful connections to the subject matters at hand. I am available most weekday evenings, as well as during the weekends.

Psychology

I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, with over 300 hours of practice in the field of therapy. Proofreading

My roles as a teacher and a college advisor involve a high level of proofreading. Many of the students I work with are applying to programs at Ivy league universities. Thus, I have developed a critical eye for spelling, wording, and sentence structure.

SAT Reading

Reading is one of my strengths. I will assist you in not only developing the skills necessary to address the questions contained in the SAT, but also a sense of how to best approach the test as a whole, and to think critically about preparation strategies.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a private tutor for students ranging from grades K-6 since I was in high school. My goal is to help students understand difficult concepts, and to take the extra steps to succeed on projects involving research or creativity.

Phonics

Throughout college, I worked part-time as a tutor for language skills at levels ranging from elementary through high school. One major area of expertise was phonics for reading.

Study Skills

I have taught various courses in study skills to students as young as elementary age, up through college. Topics include time management, techniques for improving reading and memorizing, test preparation, and avoiding procrastination.

Bible Studies

My studies at Azusa Pacific University and Fuller Theological Seminary have resulted in a large number of units in Biblical Studies. Since graduating, it has remained a firm interest of mine, and I am able to tutor in Old Testament, New Testament, and cultural studies relating to the Bible.

Public Speaking

Many of my courses require a strong level of public speaking. I view my job as an instructor to help my students prepare their public speaking skills through development of topics, organization of information, non-verbal communication, and confidence in presenting.

Career Development

I have 12 years of experience working in college career centers, most recently at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena. My experience includes creating and editing resumes and cover letters, conducting mock interviews, developing networks and setting career goals. I have taught classes in career management and conducted a wide range of workshops on career related topics.

College Counseling

I have worked with both high school and college students to form applications and personal statements for college and graduate school admissions, as well as medical school. In my role of pre-health advisor at the California Institute of Technology, I saw 96% of my students accepted to medical school last year.

CBEST

I taught for five years at Azusa Pacific University in the Human Development program. Part of the program involved preparing students to take the CBEST test. Beyond the basic information contained within my course, I conducted quarterly workshops designed to train students to prepare for the reading, writing and math sections.
