I am unique in that I am a professional actor with a Single-Subject Teaching Credential in English, so I utilize some acting tools to teach Language Arts. I have excellent communication, literary analysis, reading comprehension and listening skills, which I utilize to the nth degree in helping my students achieve their academic goals and reach their potential. I tutor students in all aspects of English Language Arts, including dramatic reading and interpretation, as well as exam prep for such as the SAT and CAHSEE. Though I tutor mostly in grades 8 to 12, I have been tutoring a second grader who is excelling in school, so occasionally I will tutor at elementary levels.

My tutor philosophy is that every minute counts, so I keep student-parent conversations focused on the work in order to have productive sessions. I survey and assess the student at our first meeting, discussing student needs and concerns of the parents so that there is a clear understanding of the work to be done and how I am going to help the student improve. I do not correct homework from students' classes, as their regular teacher may be grading for specific content or technique, which is their responsibility alone.

Writing

My familiarity with the writing standards for teaching ELA and experience in writing, which includes various types of writing from essays to business letters, enables me to assist you in developing your writing skills in alignment with your unique voice.

English

I earned my Single-Subject Teaching Credential in English from Point Loma Nazarene University. I am familiar with middle school and high school California Standards for English Language Arts. I am qualified to teach ELLs, a certification included in my credential.

Study Skills

As an English teacher, I also taught a Seminar (Advisory) class in which I utilized AVID tools and techniques to teach students best practices for studying. Part of the curriculum I taught addressed test taking skills, good vs bad study habits, time management and application of mind set. Many students who applied these learned skills in their classes, at home and during exams told me how excited they were with the difference in their confidence and grades.

Theatre

I am a professional actor with a solid theater background. I have been an instructor at a theater camp developed by my church to expose in-crisis students from a local charter school to the performing arts and have also taught dramatic content in the high school English curriculum.

Public Speaking

I am a credentialed English Teacher, public speaking being a competency that is integral to the profession. With additional skills and experience as a professional actor, I have exceptional aptitude in vocal and physical interpretation. I enjoyed teaching this key content area in my high school curriculum.
