I cherish every student, but I don’t necessarily want to build a long-term relationship with them. At the cost of tutoring, that is not a good deal for everyone. I will quickly fill in the gaps, get you caught up, and teach you how to deal with new concepts on your own. Later, if your subject presents a new challenge, we can handle that with an occasional tutoring session.

I'm more expensive than many other tutors. Am I worth it? My students think so; click on the “Student Feedback” tab to see what they have said about my tutoring.

I will not judge you, I will just help you. I will meet you at your level of understanding, wherever that is, and we will build from there. Many students were never taught the basic concepts behind their courses. Because of that, the entire course can be a struggle for them. If you were never taught the basic concepts, we will clear that up first, so you can really understand your subject.

I have a degree from Stanford and an advanced degree from USC, but that is not really important. The most important question is whether I can help you with your most difficult subject.

I don't hit it out of the park with every student. When a student feels it isn't working, there is no charge, period.

I had exactly one lesson with this student. During the lesson, he seemed very satisfied with my tutoring. If he had mentioned during the lesson (or at any time afterwards) that he was not totally satisfied, I would have apologized and would not have charged him. Apparently he preferred to conceal his feelings and then post a negative comment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am certified in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science as well as in SAT reading, writing and math. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

ACT Math

I am certified in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science as well as in SAT reading, writing and math. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

ACT Reading

I am certified in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science as well as in SAT reading, writing and math. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

ACT Science

I am certified in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science as well as in SAT reading, writing and math. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

ADD/ADHD

ADD is not a disease or a defect, and people with ADD are not disabled. They are often frustrated, sometimes embarrassed, and they can become depressed because they are labeled as lazy or irresponsible and their best efforts are judged "not good enough." They live in a world which expects them to act in ways which are difficult for them to manage. Coping with ADD (or ADHD) is a matter of learning habits that most people don’t have to learn, of thinking about and doing things which most people don’t have to think about or do. It's not easy, but nothing worthwhile is easy. The secret is that learning and doing those things will not stop you from being the special person you have always been.

As a person "gifted" with ADD myself, I can relate to some of the challenges students face in their efforts to perform. I will not judge a student; I will meet them at their level of understanding and take them from there. I can teach them the coping techniques and skills they need. I am patient and kind, but firm when I need to be firm.

Algebra 1

I have helped students understand every math subject from prealgebra through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. Often, when a student is having challenges in math, it is because one or two concepts slipped by, or weren’t taught properly. This makes the next concept more difficult, and pretty soon a student can be overwhelmed. I will quickly help you get caught up, and then help you get ahead, so that your math classes will be like review sessions instead of “mystery hours”.

Algebra 2

I have helped students understand every math subject from prealgebra through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. Often, when a student is having challenges in math, it is because one or two concepts slipped by, or weren’t taught properly. This makes the next concept more difficult, and pretty soon a student can be overwhelmed. I will quickly help you get caught up, and then help you get ahead, so that your math classes will be like review sessions instead of “mystery hours”.

American History

The history of the United States is fascinating, and I love to teach it. I have tutored many students in American History, with excellent results. If you are having difficulty with American History, I can help.

Aspergers

Aspergers is not a learning disability, but a social challenge. While I am not trained as a psychiatrist or a therapist, I have tutored several students who have Aspergers, and our results have been excellent. I am very patient and understanding, and I stay focused on the lesson regardless of my students' comments. Thus, I am able to help these students get the learning they need in a positive atmosphere.

ASVAB

I am certified in SAT reading, writing and math, as well as LSAT, MCAT, GRE and GMAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more importantly, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on the ASVAB, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

Bar Exam

I passed the California Bar Exam the first time I took it. Of course, I took a course including lectures and practice exams. I think it would be foolish for anyone to take the Bar Exam without doing that.

But if your course is not giving you all the help you need - if you feel you could benefit from more individualized help, I would be happy to give it to you.

Bible Studies

I have studied the Bible for many years, and have taught and tutored many people in Bible studies. I continue to study the Bible. I will never stop studying it, and I love to teach others about it.

Biology

I am tutoring several students in high school and college biology. Biology can be difficult to understand; it is easy to fall behind, and it can be extremely difficult to catch up without help. If you are falling behind, I can help you catch up and learn what you need to know to pass; if you are willing to do some work, I can help you excel.

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST a couple of years ago. It was much like the other standardized tests I have taken, and I have scored above the 95th percentile on every one of those tests I have taken, including the SAT and LSAT.

I know the subject matter, but more importantly, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

Chemistry

I am tutoring several students in high school and college chemistry. Chemistry can be difficult to understand; it is easy to fall behind, and it can be extremely difficult to catch up without help. If you are falling behind, I can help you catch up and learn what you need to know to pass; if you are willing to do some work, I can help you excel.

College Counseling

I have worked with many students who were applying to college and graduate schools, helping them to complete their applications. In particular, I have helped them polish their essays and personal statements and (for graduates) their thesis applications and dissertation statements.

Criminal Justice

I practiced law for 32 years, and handled more than 250 criminal cases, many of which were in federal court. I conducted many trials, and quite a few appeals.

Elementary Math

I have helped many junior high and high school students understand math and science, and I can help students in earlier grades as well. I am patient but firm, and I try to make the lessons interesting for my students.

Elementary Science

I have helped many junior high and high school students understand math and science, and I can help students in earlier grades as well. I am patient but firm, and I try to make the lessons interesting for my students.

English

I have tutored many students in high school and college English, and I can help you improve your critical reading and writing skills.

General Computer

Computers do not have to be scary or difficult. It's easy to make a computer do what you want, if you know just a few basics. I have helped many people to get control of their computers, and I can quickly help you.

Geometry

I have helped students understand every math subject from prealgebra through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. Often, when a student is having challenges in math, it is because one or two concepts slipped by, or weren’t taught properly. This makes the next concept more difficult, and pretty soon a student can be overwhelmed. I will quickly help you get caught up, and then help you get ahead, so that your math classes will be like review sessions instead of “mystery hours”.

GMAT

I am certified in GMAT prep, as well as GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

Standardized tests do not measure education or knowledge. They measure your ability to find the correct answer quickly, again and again. I can teach you to do that.

Grammar

I have tutored many students in high school and college English, and I can help you improve your critical reading, writing, and speaking skills.

GRE

I am certified in GRE prep, as well as GMAT, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

ISEE

I am certified in SSAT prep, SAT reading, writing and math, LSAT, MCAT, GRE and GMAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken, including the PSAT, SAT, and LSAT.

I know the subject matter, but more importantly, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

Law

As a lawyer, I made my living writing and arguing legal situations, as well as analyzing the writing of others for 30 years. Since retiring, I have been tutoring students in many subjects, some of them in law. I do not give legal advice, but I can give research and writing advice to law students and law clerks.

Literature

As a lawyer, I made my living writing and analyzing the writing of others for 30 years. Since retiring, I have used my love of literature to tutor many students in high school and college English and literature courses. I can help you improve your critical reading and writing skills.

LSAT

I am certified in LSAT prep, as well as MCAT, GRE, and GMAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

Having practiced law for over 30 years, I know the subject matter. More important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on the LSAT, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

MCAT

I am a teacher and tutor, and I can help you improve your score on the MCAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on all the standardized tests I have taken, and I can teach you the best of what I know about taking this sort of test.
In addition to my academic and test-taking expertise, I have considerable real-world experience with all the subjects on the MCAT, having dealt extensively with them. During the 30+ years I spent as a trial lawyer, I defended many product liability and medical malpractice cases.
Finally, I can teach you how to write clearly and efficiently: unlike the proverbial lawyer who speaks and writes in "legalese", a trial attorney must quickly make his case understandable and interesting to the judge and the jury.

Physics

I am tutoring several students in high school and college physics. Physics can be difficult to understand, and it is easy for a student to fall behind. Once a student falls behind, it can be virtually impossible to catch up without help. If you are falling behind, I can help you catch up and learn what you need to know to pass; if you are willing to do some work, I can help you excel.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra introduces students to many new concepts, and it can get confusing at times. If a student gets behind, it can be very difficult to catch up. I have helped many students catch up in prealgebra, and also to get ahead, so that their classes can be like review sessions instead of "mystery hours".

Precalculus

I have helped students understand every math subject from prealgebra through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. Often, when a student is having challenges in math, it is because one or two concepts slipped by, or weren’t taught properly. This makes the next concept more difficult, and pretty soon a student can be overwhelmed. I will quickly help you get caught up, and then help you get ahead, so that your math classes will be like review sessions instead of “mystery hours”.

PSAT

I am certified in SAT reading, writing and math, as well as LSAT, MCAT, GRE and GMAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

Public Speaking

During the 32 years I practiced law, I spoke hundreds of times in court, and in meetings large and small. I also taught other attorneys and my clients how to speak in public and before groups and coached and critiqued them on their efforts. Since I began teaching and tutoring, I have tutored many students in the art of speaking before groups.

SAT Math

I am certified in SAT reading, writing and math as well as in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

SAT Reading

I am certified in SAT reading, writing and math as well as in ACT English, Math, Reading and Science. I am also certified in GMAT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken.

I know the subject matter, but more important, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

SSAT

I am certified in SAT reading, writing and math, as well as LSAT, MCAT, GRE and GMAT. I have scored above the 95th percentile on every standardized test I have taken, including the PSAT, SAT, and LSAT.

I know the subject matter, but more importantly, I know what to do to get the highest score possible on these tests, and I can quickly teach these tips and techniques to you.

Statistics

Statistics is a complicated subject, and it is confusing even for the best students. If you get behind, it can be extremely difficult to catch up. I have helped many students get caught up in their statistics courses, and I can help you, unless you're studying advanced ANOVA or SPSS.

Study Skills

Do you live for the adrenaline rush of last-minute cramming for the test, for the excitement of not knowing whether you passed until you get your grade? Are you happiest staying up all night finishing that paper, turning it in at the last minute, knowing that you could have done a better job if you just had a little more time?

If those things make you happy, then don’t call me, because I will burst your bubble. I will show you that it's actually easier to practice good study skills than to try to do your work without them. I will show you how to get your work done faster, learn more, and turn in better work with less total effort.

It's your choice: scatter your efforts and get poor-to-average results, or work smarter and get better results.

TOEFL

I have tutored many students in high school and college English, and I can help you improve the critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills you need to pass the TOEFL.

Trigonometry

I have helped students understand every math subject from prealgebra through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. Often, when a student is having challenges in math, it is because one or two concepts slipped by, or weren’t taught properly. This makes the next concept more difficult, and pretty soon a student can be overwhelmed. I will quickly help you get caught up, and then help you get ahead, so that your math classes will be like review sessions instead of “mystery hours”.

Writing

I have tutored many students in high school and college English, and I have helped college and grad students improve their essays, reports, thesis and dissertation proposals, and personal statements. I can quickly help you write and revise your essay, proposal or personal statement.
