I have been very fortunate to have lived, worked, and volunteered in the South Bay and Palos Verdes communities, and am well acquainted with the area's public schools and their academic standards and expectations. My professional career includes significant classroom experience as a full-time intermediate and high school teacher of English Literature and Writing, and American/European history. I continued working in the classroom in the Palos Verdes Unified School District while my husband and I raised our children.
Utilizing my teaching/training/communication skills, I have since pursued a career in technology, enjoying significant success helping diverse companies, law firms, organizations, and individuals integrate, better understand and utilize technology. I remain most proud, however, that I began my professional career as a classroom teacher, helping educate young students, as well as adults, with varying skills, talents and needs. I continue to love teaching, and get supreme satisfaction from helping students of all ages become more passionate about learning for their academic, professional, and personal enrichment.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

In addition to teaching English and writing to intermediate and high school students, I am a technology consultant and trainer, and have written content for professional websites.

Phonics

I am a California-credentialed English and history teacher who has many years of experience teaching and tutoring students in language arts. An understanding of phonics, which is a method used in teaching reading and writing, is critical in developing the learner's ability to hear and identify sounds, and how such sounds correspond to spelling patterns. My goal in teaching phonics is to help beginning readers 'decode' new written words by breaking them down and sounding them out, and then blending the sound and spelling patterns.
