I am a creative, passionate, and patient tutor specializing in MCAT subjects, and hope my enthusiasm can bring success to others. I am exceptionally good at reading people's problem solving abilities and adapting my methods accordingly.

A bit about my experience: I graduated magna cum laude from New York University with a thesis in honors political science. As much as I loved a good Obamacare debate, I quickly realized politics was not in my future and decided to apply to medical school. Currently, I'm in the post-submission gap year of waiting and anticipating that many premeds know too well. I have a 4.0 science GPA (including Calc I and II), and received a score of 38 (12 physical/12 verbal/14 biological) on the MCAT. Tutoring-wise, I have privately coached many friends and friends' friends in the required premed courses alongside MCAT prep, and have recently been expanding my student base through Wyzant. Need to find a mechanism in base or determine the magnetic field direction? No problem. As a bit of a perfectionist, I will not settle with a topic until both you and I are satisfied with the results.

Though my area of expertise is the MCAT, I am comfortable teaching college-level physics, chemistry (general and organic), and biology. I have also enjoyed success teaching Russian to beginners, so try out learning that new language you always wanted! Don't hesitate to send me comments, criticism, or cookies, pre- or post-lesson. We will make a study plan based on your problematic areas that will be time-efficient and get you real results. Send a message my way if I sound like the right tutor for you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I received a 5 on the AP Bio exam and an A in both semesters of NYU's biology course. After this, I scored 14 (99th percentile) in the biological sciences portion of the MCAT, which is comprised of biology and organic chemistry. There is an overwhelming amount of information in this subject matter, so method of teaching biology is rooted in organization - tables, pictures, diagrams, and flowcharts. The content becomes easier to memorize once it is categorized in this manner.

When this is sorted, and depending on your desired level of depth, we will work on deducing answers to hypothetical scenarios that are all too common in upper-level bio courses. A simple example is "what would happen to the tonicity if the membrane is perforated?" This will give you a deeper understanding of the principles guiding the physiology of living things, and eventually allow you to see patterns and relationships that hold true in any field of biology.

Chemistry

I have a mathematically oriented mind and have always felt strongest in the physical sciences. Along with receiving As in all semesters of high school and university chemistry, both general and organic, I have tutored chemistry extensively to my friends and classmates during my college years. My favorite subsection is buffers, a topic which most students in my experience have had trouble with.

Once I break down the wealth of content down into easily digestible portions, I will highlight key formulas and concepts so that the student may develop an intuitive understanding of various relationships. This understanding will be substantiated with shortcuts and simple diagrams for quick recall during an exam, or when presented with new but related information.

MCAT

I scored 38 (12 physical sciences, 12 verbal reasoning, 14 biological sciences) on the MCAT on 01/23/14. I used a self-study method by purchasing books from The Berkeley Review, The Princeton Review, and Examkrackers, and taking detailed notes on each subject. Since then, I have tutored friends and fellow premeds using my notes to organize a schedule and the books for practice passages. I plan to continue using these books and my notes with future students.

Organic Chemistry

I received an A both semesters in the Majors Organic Chemistry & Lab course at New York University, which is an honors class usually only available to chemistry majors. As a political science major, I had to demonstrate proficiency in chemistry and receive As in the general chemistry courses in order to join this class. Moreover, I received a 14 on the biological sciences portion of the MCAT, which includes biology and organic chemistry. Success with mechanisms in Orgo lies in seeing inventive ways to push electrons and learning to "speak" the organic chemistry language, which would be the skills I hope to teach in tutoring this subject.

Russian

Russian is my native tongue, as I was born in Moscow and lived there until I was 10. Upon coming to America, I spent 6-7 years taking private lessons in Russian grammar and literature. As such, I remain fluent in speaking, reading, and writing. I currently teach Russian to beginners from the following two books: "Russian Course: A complete course for beginners" by Nicholas J. Brown, and "The Everything Learning Russian Book" by Julia Stakhnevich. Each lesson consists of a bit of vocab, grammar, and reading/writing. I try to engage my students in fun activities as much as possible, like deducing the missing lyrics from a Russian song or translating common English names and titles.

Best tutor ever! — I don't even know where to begin with Maria. I originally needed some Ochem help but after realizing what an MCAT master she was, I decided to get help in other sections too! Maria knows everything about anything MCAT related and I wish I could post her countless 5 page emails explaining things down to the detail when I was freaking out about this exam either it be 2 weeks before the exam or the n ...
