Desktop Publishing

I have a Master's Degree in Education with an area of emphasis in Educational Technology. I have worked as a graphics and web designer using software including Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Pagemaker, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Framemaker and other desktop publishing software. I've also designed business cards, brochures, and flyers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with CLAD certification. I have taught 5th grade in the public school system and have been a long-term substitute teacher for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. I look forward to working with your child.

English

I have prior teaching experience in English and I have a current credential to teach English in grades K-12.

ESL/ESOL

I have 3 years experience teaching ESL in the public school system, and am TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certified. I have a Master's in Education and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) certification.

Macintosh

I learned how to use a computer on a Macintosh platform over 20 years ago. I currently use a Mac, and have used and owned a Macintosh computer in an educational and business setting. I can help you or your student get the most out of this operating system.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology and worked many years as an administrator using PowerPoint to develop my presentations.

Phonics

I am qualified to tutor phonics because I have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, a Masters in Education degree, and have taught phonics previously when substitute teaching kindergarten and first grade. One method I use to teach phonics is by analogy. In analogy phonics I teach students unfamiliar words by analogy to known words (e.g., recognizing that the rime segment of an unfamiliar word is identical to that of a familiar word, and then blending the known rime with the new word onset, such as reading brick by recognizing that -ick is contained in the known word kick, or reading stump by analogy to jump). Another method I use is to teach students explicitly to convert letters into sounds (phonemes) and then blend the sounds to form recognizable words.

TOEFL

I have a Masters degree in Education, am TOEFL certified, and certified to teach English and second language learners in the public school system.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
