I have loved tutoring/teaching math (pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, calculus) for over 17 years. I am a credentialed classroom teacher, but I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to quickly figure out their learning style and to tailor my instruction to what works for them. I believe that it is necessary to teach math for understanding rather than having students memorizing procedures, and it is probably through my engineering background that I recognize that it is critical to break down problems and concepts into steps, the size of which depends directly on the needs of the student. I strongly believe that everyone can be successful at math, and my goal is to give students the tools and confidence they need to achieve success.
Please make sure that you are either within my 10 mile travel radius, or are willing to work with me online. I don’t yet know if I’ll have availability for new long-term students this fall (I’ll know more by September), but feel free to contact me if you have a short-term need for tutoring help. After a couple of tough years of math in middle school, my son started saying, "I'm just not meant to be good at math." This past year, Rebecca has been tutoring him, and it has made all the difference. Rebecca is a skilled teacher. She explains concepts clearly and easily zeros in on areas that need more attention. She is also kind and supportive - I can tell that she really cares about my son's success. He trusts her and looks forward to their sessions each week. We are grateful for her help.
Ms. D is an amazing teacher who is able to help me understand any concept that I needed. The most important thing to me is that she created my interest in math. By constantly questioning me, and having me discover things for myself, I was able to see the underlying concepts and this made math much easier and much more interesting. She encouraged me to do self-research, like when I was confused as to how the complex plane could lie with the coordinate plane, and why polynomials on the coordinate plane can have imaginary solutions? This self-research made the math a lot more like science and a lot more fun and intellectual. I had a 5-week course with Ms. D in which we were able to cover the 2 books that my school uses, and help me prepare for Pre-Calculus by covering many of the concepts. Ms. D is very approachable and I was even able to ask her questions and have them answered by e-mail. She is also very transparent and showed us the full lesson costs, etc. Ms. D is also very efficient; we would cover about 2 chapters every night in 1.5 hours. She also gives plenty of practice work for her students to do, and has a wide range of different types of problems. She is also very helpful in memorization of concepts. Algebra 2/Trig has a lot of memorization that needs to be done, and she has a lot of methods for memorization and knows how to derive every single concept. Ms. D was a wonderful tutor, and if in the future I need a tutor again, I will surely contact her.
This summer Rebecca tutored my son who attended a high school geometry course. We decided to hire a tutor because we were concerned about the fast pace of the class, which was covering a yearlong course in less than 6 weeks. Rebecca proposed the right tutoring approach consisting of a preview session during the weekend, which provided an introduction to the material that was going to be cover during the week, and a sync up session toward the end of the week, which was used to go over homework and prepare for tests. My son found Rebecca's coaching not only effective, but also very enjoyable. We were very pleased with Rebecca's flexibility to adapt to my son's needs and schedule. She was always on time and came prepared with a lesson plan and additional exercises to ensure concepts were well understood. My son got an A for the class.
My daughter has struggled in math class in the past and has always felt anxious when it comes to math. Rebecca reteaches the concepts that my daughter is learning in class with more detail, which improves her understanding of the material. This is extremely helpful when she does not understand the lessons taught in class. Rebecca is very patient and knows the material well, making her an excellent tutor.
My son set out to learn Algebra 2 in the span of 8 weeks this summer, and we hired Rebecca to help him with this tall order. She exceeded both my and my son's expectations. More importantly, here are my son's thoughts:
Overall, I have really enjoyed my experience in learning Algebra 2 with Rebecca because she was not only helpful in learning the material, but she also gave tips and tricks that were very useful. Using a step by step method, I learned material from all ten chapters and now I feel confident in my abilities to do any problem. Her time, effort, and passion for helping me learn have been incredible and I felt that she really pushed me to become the best I could be. I would definitely recommend her to any student wanting to learn any level of high school math.
Rebecca is very experienced with different types of math. She will help thoroughly explain concepts, and show you step by step how a problem is done. She is patient and kind. After my daughter had a few lessons with her, she has shown improvement in her math homework and tests. She got 100% on her math final, hooray.
Rebecca is a wonderful tutor. My daughter was so happy to have a chance to go through all of her review sheets with Rebecca. It really helped her and she got much higher grade after tutoring.
Rebecca is an incredible tutor/teacher. She not only does the "math" but she identifies how the student is emotionally or otherwise dealing with the subject (in this case math). She tailors her instruction to maximize what the student learns during the tutoring sessions. My son has learning issues specifically with math yet he wants to major in engineering. Rebecca not only worked hard to give him the skills to work through math problems in general but also supported and encouraged him to try engineering.
My son has had many tutors over the years but Rebeca's the best!!!
I found Rebecca through WyzAnt to help my son with ACT math prep while he was at Stanford for 2 months (we actually live in TN). Rebecca was very professional and prompt with her communication with me to set up this tutoring arrangement - which I really appreciated. And, Rebecca took the time to drive to Stanford and meet my son for his lessons at the local student center. The actual lessons were challenging and she was always well prepared. Couldn't ask for anything better and we are indebted to Rebecca for helping my son so much this summer. Thank you so much!
We hired Rebecca to work weekly with 2 of our kids throughout the entire school year: one child in AP-Calculus (to fill in the gaps from the public school system and to ensure good AP test scores) and the other child in Algebra 1 (because he struggled with pre-Algebra last year). Finding a tutor who was so skilled in such different areas of math was a treasure. She was able to work with our kids’ different learning styles & personalities. Rebecca has a brilliant mind for math; it is obvious that she loves sharing her knowledge with her pupils. Rebecca spent her own time to bookmark our kids’ math teacher websites, enabling her to know ahead of time when tests were approaching and what subjects were being taught next. She was punctual, reliable, and easy to get a hold of, flexible during holidays and always ready to add an extra session before a big test if we needed it.
Rebecca is the best math tutor we could imagine. We wholeheartedly recommend her to tutor your children too!
Rebecca has been invaluable for my son; his math grades have improved significantly since she began working with him. She explains difficult concepts in a very clear and easily understood manner, and she shares her mastery of the subject matter in each lesson. She is very reliable and quickly responds to calls and email contacts. We were referred to Rebecca by a friend who has had the same success in working with her, and in turn, have been so pleased with Rebecca's tutoring skills that we have referred her to others. Highly recommended!!
My daughter raves about Rebecca. She says that she gets so much out of the time she spends with her. I just wish that we had found her earlier in the academic year! Thank you so much, Rebecca. My daughter was becoming disenchanted with math and I was concerned that she would abandon it altogether after this term. I am fairly confident that she will still want to take AP Calculus next year!!
Rebecca continues to be an amazing teacher. Since my daughter restarted school, Rebecca regularly inquires as to her learning status in school, trying to anticipate her learning needs and re-appraising her status as to what she did not understand at every meeting. Rebecca has not just confined her teaching to the lessons themselves but cares enough to follow up with emails sent late at night and even on the weekends, trying to handle issues we might have. She is such a caring individual and I cannot say enough positive things about her. I am very glad that she is our daughter's tutor.
We love Rebecca! Clear, professional, reliable, excellent communicator! She's a wonderful tutor and we're so grateful to have found her.
I was struggling with Algebra 2 & looking for a tutor to help me through finals in my sophomore year in high school.
I happen to do an internet search for “math help” and found Wyzant and found Rebecca. Rebecca helped me better understand Algebra 2 in just about two weeks time.
She is very patient, and has great teaching style.
She made sure I understood a math problem first before we moved on to the next.
She is reliable, dependable, responsive and accommodating, I always know I will hear back from her. She wanted to help me as much as I wanted her help. I would call on her again and recommend her anytime!
One word. EXCELLENT. Extremely patient and thorough. Very punctual, very pleasant demeanor, my daughter took to her immediately, she has a very good understanding of the subject. We whole heartedly recommend Rebecca for Math tutoring. My daughter's grades went up due to the excelling tutoring that she recevied from Rebecca.
Rebecca is an excellent teacher and we are fortunate to have discovered her through WyzAnt. After two problematic years in junior high school math our 13 yr old son needed assistance with algebra I. Rebecca took the time to research our son's math background, the books used at his junior high school, and developed a very comprehensive plan for this summer's tutelage. Rebecca has a pleasant, direct teaching style; she communicates beautifully, finding the fine balance between professional teacher and gentle voiced, encouraging coach. Our son no longer feels frustrated and feels a sense of pride when he completes his homework efficiently and correctly.
Hi -- Rebecca helped our daughter Kate with PreCal. Kate's teacher didn't really teach the subject so she needed someone to help fill in the many gaps. Rebecca was always prepared in advance for the lessons, patient, and very good at explaining the various concepts and formulas. Kate has had several other tutors in PreCal, I would say if you need a PreCal tutor, contact Rebecca!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy tutoring for the ACT because I feel that this test assesses students more on their math knowledge than on their test-taking strategy. I have had excellent results with the students I have helped (there's a review from one of them on my profile page), and my experience/familiarity with the secondary math curriculum allows me to give students a complete review of the content covered on the ACT.
My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 1 in public schools) has been invaluable for recognizing common misconceptions and developing explanations that students can really understand. I enjoy highlighting the connections between topics for students, through which they gain a deeper understanding of the math concepts. A strong foundation in Algebra 1 will serve them well for the remainder of their math education.
My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 2 in public schools) has given me an excellent understanding of the connections throughout the secondary curriculum. I am able to explain to students how their prior knowledge can be applied to new material, as well as motivate them by explaining how they'll use the information in future classes. Algebra 2 is one of my favorite courses, because students' understanding of what they learned in Algebra 1 is deepened and expanded; they begin to understand more of the "why" in addition to the "how".
I think I have more appreciation now for the beauty and power of calculus than I did when I first learned it! It's so rewarding to explain these concepts to students, and watch their excitement when things all start to make sense. Calculus is so much easier for students when they understand the physical significance of derivatives and integrals, so I spend a great deal of time working on that with them. As an engineer, it's very rewarding to be able to share the relevance of these concepts for solving practical problems such as related rates and optimizations.
Before earning my secondary teaching credential, I worked as a math tutor for 3rd through 5th graders in a public elementary school. Due to this experience, I am able to explain math concepts at a level that is developmentally appropriate. I enjoy engaging students this age with fun puzzles and activities that at the same time deepen their conceptual understanding. Students who struggle with math are especially in need of a confidence-boosting experience, and they need to know that excellent mathematicians are MADE and not born.
Although a student may have excelled at algebra, geometry can often be challenging if they're not an extremely visual learner or processor. In my work with geometry students, I encourage them to look at diagrams, proofs, etc. in at least a couple of ways, finding alternative strategies whenever possible so that their "toolbox" will be more extensive for future problems.
I am currently teaching pre-algebra part-time in a public school, and I'm having a blast! I love teaching students at this age, where their critical thinking and reasoning skills have matured to the point where problem-solving can be exciting rather than intimidating. I have a large library of enrichment material for those students who need/want additional challenge, and I also have experience tailoring my explanations to meet the learning style of students who are having difficulty with the content.
Pre-calculus is often somewhat of a survey course without a unified curriculum, and I have been able to help students tie together the various topics and explain how they will be important in their future math courses. Whether it's explaining the relevance of polar graphs or giving examples of trig applications, I am able to guide them through this important transition to calculus and beyond.
I have tutored a number of students both for the regular SAT and the SAT2 subject test. One of those students received a score of 800, and told me that I was a huge help for him in scoring that high. Although I tutor and teach all secondary courses up through Calculus, the bulk of my students are taught/tutored in pre-algebra through algebra 2, which is the major content source for the SAT. I am able not only to review the separate topics covered on the test, but also tie topics together so that students don't need to rely upon memorization.
I have extensive experience tutoring high school students in both Algebra 2 and Precalculus, where they study trigonometry at various levels. I am extremely well-versed in all of the areas of trigonometry -- unit circle, modeling with periodic functions, trig identities and equations, angular velocity. My students find that the subject makes a lot more sense after they've studied it with me; they are able to see the "big picture," i.e., how the topics are tied together.
