Kids learn best when they are motivated to work hard and encouraged to find ways to be interested in the topic. As a graduate from UC Berkeley and Palo Alto Senior High, I understand working hard. I earned a BA in History through hours spent honing my reading comprehension, test-taking, research, and writing skills. Throughout school, I learned that hard work is most rewarding when I can find ways to connect it to my interests and passions. Through that process, I picked up double minors in Medieval Studies and Education.
Since then, I have worked for the organization as an SAT Math, Critical Reading, and Writing Tutor for local high school students at Menlo-Atherton, Palo Alto Senior High School, and Eastside College Preparatory School. I have also privately tutored European History and American History AP students in Berkeley, and helped Middle School students hone their essay skills through WritersCoach Connection. I have experience as a literacy and pre-literacy development tutor for elementary students through my coursework at UC Berkeley. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate schools, with the intention of becoming a middle school and high school history teacher.
In my experience, every student brings a wealth of useful background knowledge and skills to the table. As a tutor, my goal is to help students connect new learning to the cognitive bridges they already have. I help students build from their favorite topics--whether it is sports, Lord of the Rings, or fashion--to connect with new knowledge, from SAT Math word problems to literacy and study skills. Through this method, I empower students with the steps to add new academic knowledge to their cognitive toolbox in the future, and I make learning fun in the present!
I know how busy students are, so I have a flexible cancellation policy, and offer makeup sessions. I am willing to meet wherever the student feels most comfortable and focused; my house in Palo Alto is a calm and quiet place to meet, and I am also willing to travel to the students' house or a coffee shop convenient for them.
