I love working with the English language. Whatever your goal is for our time, I want to help you meet and exceed it. I'll show you strategies that will help you get more out of what you read. Tell me about your interest in music or art or math, and we’ll look for ways that that interest connects to language skills. I’ll explain why your professor chose MLA over APA or why that missing comma is so critical. We can swap stories about traveling. I’ll help you perfect your college admissions essay. I might just sing my preposition song for you. I have edited two self-published books, and I am the personal grammar expert for a friend in law school. I enjoy helping people meet their personal goals.

During three years of high school classroom experience, I've taught everything from grade 9 remedial reading to grade 12 college prep world literature. My Ohio teaching license is for Language Arts in grades 7-12, and Reading in grades K-12. I have experience tutoring a variety of students, including elementary-age kids, adults, and English language learners.

In undergrad, I was a creative writing major and I minored in music. In grad school, I kept a 4.0 GPA, and I scored a 198/200 on the required test for aspiring teachers: Praxis II: English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content Knowledge. (Praxis the national standard test for receiving a teaching license for English. Ohio's passing score is 167/200, one of the toughest in the country.) I look forward to meeting you!

Algebra 1

As a successful math student myself, I understand the logic necessary to work through Algebra concepts. As a certified English teacher, I can explain those far-out math concepts in plain English.

Vocabulary

I really enjoy expanding my vocabulary, and I can share strategies with you to make it stress-free. I use a lot of affixes, other morphemes, and etymologies as mnemonics. (In other words: finding meaning in word chunks will help you remember new words!)

Grammar

I thrive inside the subtleties of English grammar. I enjoy studying both red-pen English and the more natural grammar of linguistics. I field phone calls from a lawyer friend when her contract's perfection hinges on perfect commas. If you're lucky, I will sing you my Preposition Song. Grammar does not have to be miserable!

General Computer

I have used both Macs and PCs, and I'm skilled with word processing programs, Internet research sites, and computer shortcuts. I'm very patient; just ask my mom :)

Geometry

Proof-based geometry is as much about making good use of the resources in your textbook as it is about math concepts. We English teachers know a thing or two about using reference materials!

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a robust program. My specialty is setting up essays in MLA format. For example, those Works Cited entries can be a real pain if you don't know how to work the hanging indent feature.

Prealgebra

Reading

I'm a recreational reader. I enjoy discussing literature with students, and I have collected many useful strategies while earning my K-12 reading endorsement on my teaching license. I'll help you build your vocabulary and reading speed. I am especially interested in how the act of reading changes when reading on a screen compared to reading on paper.

Writing

Good writing is all about audience and purpose. I'll help you get the words right so that your ideas are clear, compelling, and concise.
Through the revising and editing process, we'll make sure the final version reflects the goals you want to achieve in your piece.

English

Grammar, vocabulary, style... I've got you covered. I am a certified English teacher in Ohio, grades 7-12, and I enjoy working with individual students to meet curriculum goals. I have experience with the Common Core English Language Arts standards that have been adopted by 45 states.

Literature

I am familiar with the traditional literary canon of American high schools, and I have a variety of strategies students can use to get the most out of their reading. I am a certified K-12 Reading teacher. I enjoy examining the social, historical, and religious contexts of a literary text in order to add depth and understanding.

Proofreading

I have an eye for detail and an ear for consistency. I have edited two self-published books for friends, and they will tell you I'm very picky.

SAT Reading

Since there are two types of questions in the SAT Reading section, I'll make sure you have strategies in place to deal with both. For sentence completion, we'll talk about vocabulary building and grammar clues. For reading passages, we'll work on speed and syntax clues.

SAT Writing

Since the Writing section of the SAT includes both multiple choice and actual writing, we'll spend time preparing for both. We'll discuss the nuances of grammar and mechanics to clear up any confusion, and we'll even discuss the ways that writing for a test is similar to and different from writing for a college class.

ACT Reading

As a certified K-12 reading teacher, I can share strategies to increase reading ability, which will increase success on the ACT Reading test. I will help students develop rhythm to maximize the time they have available during the test.

ACT English

I can explain the WHY behind many seemingly arbitrary grammar rules. Red-pen English doesn't need to be stressful.

General Music

I received a minor in music at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. I have performed in the String Bass section with the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Stow Symphony, Akron Pops, and various youth orchestras in the U.S. and in Europe.

Praxis

I scored a 198/200 on the Praxis II Test: English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content Knowledge (0041).
