Time for summer scheduling! If you'd like your student to preview the coming year's math content (pre-algebra to calculus), prep for a math placement test, get help with a summer course, fill some gaps, or just have fun with some math enrichment activities, I'd be happy to help! I am excited about helping students of all levels and abilities understand math concepts and practices. With my guidance, students experience a boost in confidence and skill level, resulting in better grades and a better attitude towards math. Please do make sure that you are either within my 10 mile travel radius or are willing to work with me online.

I have loved tutoring/teaching math (pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, calculus) for over 17 years. I am a credentialed classroom teacher, but I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to quickly figure out their learning style and to tailor my instruction to what works for them. I believe that it is necessary to teach math for understanding rather than having students memorizing procedures, and it is probably through my engineering background that I recognize that it is critical to break down problems and concepts into steps, the size of which depends directly on the needs of the student. I strongly believe that everyone can be successful at math, and my goal is to give students the tools and confidence they need to achieve success.

Algebra 1

My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 1 in public schools) has been invaluable for recognizing common misconceptions and developing explanations that students can really understand. I enjoy highlighting the connections between topics for students, through which they gain a deeper understanding of the math concepts. A strong foundation in Algebra 1 will serve them well for the remainder of their math education.

####
Algebra 2

My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 2 in public schools) has given me an excellent understanding of the connections throughout the secondary curriculum. I am able to explain to students how their prior knowledge can be applied to new material, as well as motivate them by explaining how they'll use the information in future classes. Algebra 2 is one of my favorite courses, because students' understanding of what they learned in Algebra 1 is deepened and expanded; they...

Calculus

I think I have more appreciation now for the beauty and power of calculus than I did when I first learned it! It's so rewarding to explain these concepts to students, and watch their excitement when things all start to make sense. Calculus is so much easier for students when they understand the physical significance of derivatives and integrals, so I spend a great deal of time working on that with them. As an engineer, it's very rewarding to be able to share the relevance of these concepts for...

Geometry

Although a student may have excelled at algebra, geometry can often be challenging if they're not an extremely visual learner or processor. In my work with geometry students, I encourage them to look at diagrams, proofs, etc. in at least a couple of ways, finding alternative strategies whenever possible so that their "toolbox" will be more extensive for future problems.

Prealgebra

I am currently teaching pre-algebra part-time in a public school, and I'm having a blast! I love teaching students at this age, where their critical thinking and reasoning skills have matured to the point where problem-solving can be exciting rather than intimidating. I have a large library of enrichment material for those students who need/want additional challenge, and I also have experience tailoring my explanations to meet the learning style of students who are having difficulty with the content...

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is often somewhat of a survey course without a unified curriculum, and I have been able to help students tie together the various topics and explain how they will be important in their future math courses. Whether it's explaining the relevance of polar graphs or giving examples of trig applications, I am able to guide them through this important transition to calculus and beyond.

####
ACT Math

I enjoy tutoring for the ACT because I feel that this test assesses students more on their math knowledge than on their test-taking strategy. I have had excellent results with the students I have helped (there's a review from one of them on my profile page), and my experience/familiarity with the secondary math curriculum allows me to give students a complete review of the content covered on the ACT.

Elementary Math

Before earning my secondary teaching credential, I worked as a math tutor for 3rd through 5th graders in a public elementary school. Due to this experience, I am able to explain math concepts at a level that is developmentally appropriate. I enjoy engaging students this age with fun puzzles and activities that at the same time deepen their conceptual understanding. Students who struggle with math are especially in need of a confidence-boosting experience, and they need to know that excellent mathematicians...
