Helping other to learn - and to love learning - is an enduring passion for me. I have had a varied career as a theatrical producer, author, event planner and consultant, but I have always been a teacher. I received my degree in English and education from Barnard College and have taken courses toward my Masters degree in education of emotionally disturbed children at Columbia University. I'm am licensed by the State of New York and for many years taught on a part-time and tutorial basis. I also have taught in Montessori schools.

My husband and I adopted a daughter from Korea when she was 8 years of age and spoke no English. Working with her daily and learning new techniques was an exciting and rewarding experience. Her oldest son, now 7 years of age, is autistic, and I have spent many hours researching various types of methodology, teaching aids, and support services to help him succeed.

I particularly love teaching English in all its phases, literature, history, art, and test preparation. I speak French adequately and have taken courses in Chinese. As a teacher and a parent of four children and eight grandchildren, I have learned that patience, consistency and love are the building blocks of education. My teaching methods focus on creativity, "hands on" and practical techniques, and working with the extended family to realize student goals.

I also enjoy working with teenagers and adults. One of my most rewarding experiences was teaching my grandmother to read.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have tutored students in high school to improve their study skills for more than 30 years. I also have my high school teacher's license from the State of New York. My "hands-on" approach is designed to involve each student in a curriculum and study program uniquely suited toward them, so that they are self-motivated to achieve their goals.

English

I majored in English and teaching at Barnard College in NYC and received my certification from the State of New York.

I have taught English at the high school and elementary school levels, and have used several different methods, including Montessori, as children learn best when the subject matter is matched with their skills and interests.

Phonics

I have my B.A. degree in teaching English on all levels and have worked with young students for many years in teaching grammar, reading, spelling and phonics. We adopted a daughter from Korea in 1979, and I taught her to speak and write English with a phonics system.

Public Speaking

I have a minor in public speaking from Barnard College. In addition, as a Broadway producer and founder of several educational groups, I have spoken at numerous events throughout the United States. I have also appeared frequently on television and radio. I not only teach public speaking, but help students to prepare their materials, gauge their audiences, and present their topics in an interesting, as well as informative, manner.

Study Skills

I have tutored students in high school to improve their study skills for more than 30 years. I also have my high school teacher's license from the State of New York. My "hands-on" approach is designed to involve each student in a curriculum and study program uniquely suited toward them, so that they are self-motivated to achieve their goals.

Theatre

I began working in NYC theatre at 14 years of age, and produced my first off-Broadway show at the age of 20. In the past 40+ years, I have produced over 50 shows, on and off Broadway, on National Tour, in repertory and in stock. I have been taught the technical aspects of theatre both in formal classes and through "hands on" training, and at present am the producer of Cabaret Theatre West in the Coachella Valley in Californnia.
