Even though I have a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, my passion has always been for mathematics. In college, I was part of an after school program for high school students to help them with their homework. I was also a tutor for Club-Z tutoring services for Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus. The age group that I tutored for this tutoring service ranged from middle school to high school students. Although I loved tutoring, I had to step away from it because I had a job as a preschool teacher for three years. However, during the past year and a half, I have been attending a nursing program which required me to resigned from my teaching.
In all my tutoring sessions, I first determine what the child is interested in, depending on their age. For example, if a child is interested in cars, I would try to incorporate cars in explaining a math problem or concept. I find that this attracts the student and changes their view of math as just another homework. Once I determine what the student is interested in, I, then determine what the student is having difficulty with regarding the homework. I then go through a problem or two with the student with explanations why a certain application is being used. After this, I let the student solve the problems and guide them if they need to.
With all the students, I try to have a friendly and approachable relationship with them while maintaining the goal of tutoring. I find that the more comfortable the students are with me, the more receptive they are of the tutoring that they are receiving.
