Organization and personal attention. That is what I offer to each student I tutor. I come with a plan for YOU - what are your needs and what strategies will best suit your learning style. I create assignments based on your interests that you can do on your own time in order to accelerate the learning. If you are looking for help with pronunciation, we start with videos and exercises. Looking for help with writing? I analyze a piece of your writing by reading it twice- once for content and once for grammar - making comments each time and providing links to videos and resources to help you improve your errors. I'm here to help.
I was a college instructor for 3 years teaching English language, writing skills, basic grammar, resume and cover-letter writing, and research writing - I LOVE teaching and writing. In 2012, I was awarded “Instructor of the Year” for my college because I am thorough, encouraging, and use games/interactive classroom strategies. I respect my students and provide top quality education.
Teaching wasn’t my first career. A farmer through my childhood, I worked as an assistant editor of technical papers for the US Geological Survey Water Resources Division as I graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a 3.78 GPA in English and International Affairs. I then took a position as Program Coordinator for McNair – a program that helps first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students apply for (and survive) Ph.D.s. My graduate work was at UNL and at UC Irvine (in History and later, Teaching English as a Second Language). I have a Master of Arts in English, one in History, and a TESL certification. I worked with the admissions committee for a UC Irvine graduate department.
Finally, I learned that teaching was my passion. I have passed all of the California teaching exams: CBEST, and English CSET. I taught English literature and writing at an inner-city high school before I began my career instructing at the college/university level.
