The ACT English section addresses both English grammar and usage and rhetorical skills. As an experienced grammar teacher, I can help students sharpen their grammar skills so that they can quickly eliminate incorrect answers and recognize correct ones. In the rhetorical skills section, students need to both read critically and to think like a writer in order to perform well. A Note to Parents and Guardians:
As an experienced elementary educator, I have tutored math to students in grades K-5. In all honesty, math is not my favorite subject to tutor, although I always got good grades in math up to and including trigonometry. (However, I have since forgotten everything I ever knew about trigonometry!) I do remember key geometry and algebra concepts and I am proficient in kindergarten through 5th grade math.
My greater expertise and interest is in English/Language Arts. I also love tutoring elementary social studies and science and I have subject descriptions for all of these areas. As the lead teacher in a San Francisco after school program, I designed an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum integrating language arts, social studies and science. I was also a volunteer science educator at the Berkeley Marina Shorebird Park Nature Center for one year.
Even though I don't love tutoring math, I understand that many parents want a tutor who can tutor all elementary subjects. To that end, I do accept tutoring positions where English/Language Arts, social studies and/or science tutoring is the primary need and math is a secondary need. If your child is struggling with reading or writing, I would be an excellent choice as a tutor, as I have successfully worked with many struggling readers and writers. I am a patient, enthusiastic and experienced English/Language Arts tutor.
However, if your child is seriously struggling with math, I recommend hiring a tutor who genuinely loves to tutor math. For a student who requires extensive help in several elementary subject areas, you may want to consider working with two different tutors, a Language Arts specialist such as myself, and an expert math tutor. This approach may produce better results for your child than simply working with one generalist.
Science is a fascinating subject which can easily be made dull by an uninspiring teacher. As a science educator, my first mission is to transmit a sense of wonder to my students. I find science to be exciting and at times utterly amazing, and I convey that to my students. Science has explained many of the mysteries of our world, but a good science educator does not present science as a dry, unchanging set of facts and laws, but rather as an evolving system of inquiry in which the science student plays an essential part: that of investigator.
Of course, there are immutable laws and principles that underlie the workings of our world and it is important for students to understand these. But as a science educator, I present science as more than just the study of what is already known. The most exciting part of science for most students is the sense of curiosity, investigation and discovery it engenders when it is taught well. With an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher, students learn to think like scientists and develop inquisitive minds.
As a science educator, I draw from experience in various educational contexts. As the Lead Teacher in a San Francisco after school program, I designed and led an experiential science curriculum for students ages 6 to 12 that incorporated cooking, gardening, art and reading. As a trained environmental education docent at the Shorebird Park Nature Center in Berkeley, I taught elementary school students about the ecology of the San Francisco Bay and led groups in hands-on experiments and nature discovery stations. Essential to this process was encouraging students to ask questions and guiding them to make their own discoveries. I also draw on the environmental science knowledge and commitment to conservation I gained in four years working for Greenpeace and The Sierra Club.
Currently, I volunteer with Pacifica Gardens, a community organic garden. I enjoy working with the master gardeners there and making my own discoveries as I learn more about the science of plants and soil. I have successfully used both phonics-based and whole language approaches to help Kindergarten through 3rd grade students improve their word pronunciation and reading or pre-reading skills. (This includes word 'decoding' or 'sounding out' skills for readers, and letter/sound relationships for pre-readers.)
I am experienced at working with pre-readers, early readers and challenged readers. I use a fun approach, linking phonics to picture-books for younger readers and choosing interesting age and reading-level appropriate materials for older readers still struggling with phonics. I am an experienced English/Language Arts teacher with a specialty in inclusive Language Arts Academic Intervention. I am a patient, friendly, tolerant, and enthusiastic educator with a good sense of humor. I have worked with students with mild to moderate ADD and ADHD, autism and other learning differences.
I have successfully worked with many students who were performing below grade level, including several students in Resource programs. I have also worked with several gifted students with learning differences, including ESL/ELD students with learning differences. I believe that everyone can enjoy learning, and that it is my job as an educator to help students discover their unique learning styles and build on their strengths to address their challenges. I enjoy customizing curricula and helping students find learning strategies that meet their particular learning needs, so they can rediscover their joy in learning.

For students with moderate to severe dyslexia, severe ADD or ADHD, or non-verbal/minimally verbal forms of autism, I would recommend seeking tutoring from a dyslexia specialist, certified special education teacher, or speech or other educational therapist, as appropriate.
As an experienced English/Language Arts teacher and tutor, I have taught spelling as part of the Language Arts curriculum. I take pride in my excellent spelling skills, and I believe that good spelling is an important facet of good writing. By the same token, I recognize that many students struggle with spelling.
As an English as a Second Language/ESL teacher, I also know that English spelling rules are much less consistent than spelling rules in several other languages. I can help students overcome frustration with spelling and learn to view it more as an interesting game with an unusual set of rules. I will help students see the consistent rules where they exist and recognize notable exceptions to those rules as well.
Please note: If your child is in 3rd grade or higher and is having extreme difficulty with spelling, you may want to consider testing for a learning disability, as spelling difficulties are sometimes features of underlying learning disabilities that need to be addressed.

We then set goals to strengthen students' English skills according to students' specific needs. As a native English speaker and experienced writer and writing teacher, I can help students improve their English writing skills. I help students to structure their writing to express the meaning they intend in a way that is appropriate to the context in which the writing will be presented. I have taught writing to students of all ages, from elementary school age to adult.
There are many styles of writing in the English language. I work with students to determine which style(s) of writing to concentrate on. I can teach students techniques for writing essays, academic papers, business letters and proposals, personal letters, etc. I am also experienced in teaching creative writing. Regardless of the type of writing we work on, my goal is always to help students express their ideas clearly and compellingly in writing.
Parents: I enjoy helping students of all ages improve their writing and enjoy the writing process more. I can work with students on existing school assignments as well as create assignments to develop their writing skills in targeted areas. I have worked with both native English speakers and English as a Second Language/ESL/ELD students. I am experienced at and comfortable with working with students performing at, below and above grade level.
