Languages and music have always been my passion.
I am currently an ESL teacher at an adult school and have taught all levels of ESL for many years, designed curriculum and prepared students for college. I am a native of California and have also lived and taught abroad. I am fluent in German and Spanish. I also have a basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and French.
When teaching languages, I believe in using minimal translation. In other words, when I teach English, my classes are conducted completely in English. I do not translate for Spanish speakers or Chinese speakers, unless it is absolutely necessary. Translation slows learning. Students learn and remember language better when things like visuals are used to promote understanding. I always encourage students to try to think in English, even if it is only minimal. For example: in the morning when thinking about what to make for breakfast, they should try to say or think it in English (or whatever language they are learning).
I am a leader in using technology in teaching and have designed and taught online ESL courses for the state of CA and for my school. Using technology offers a lot of extra practice in learning and there are many online resources.
In addition to language teaching, I am also a professional flutist and have taught flute.
I am responsible and get along well with people.
