Although I'm a recent returnee to Southern California, I've taught for over 20 years, a career that began by accident when I tutored both math and English at the University of San Diego. I worked in the math lab and the writing center, the former for work-study money and the latter for credits. I finished my degree in business and tried the accounting field briefly, but my heart was in teaching.
I've taught all levels of math and Spanish in secondary schools, with some experience in middle school and universities (including being a teaching fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill). While I have a thorough knowledge of the material, it's even more important that I have experience in seeing how students think and reacting and crafting lessons and explanations accordingly. I never teach "in a vacuum," meaning that wherever possible and appropriate I tie in the current knowledge with previous topics and with an eye to the future.
Just this past year I tutored groups of students in SAT preparation, both in math and verbal, and a few years ago I tutored English for an organization in San Diego. Altogether, I've been tutoring for standardized tests for 30 years and know the patterns and concepts that are tested quite thoroughly. I am confident that I can get the material across in simplified, understandable, fashion.
Final note: I am usually available one or both weekend days.
