Although I'm a recent returnee to Southern California, I've taught for over 20 years, a career that began by accident when I tutored both math and English at the University of San Diego. I worked in the math lab and the writing center, the former for work-study money and the latter for credits. I finished my degree in business and tried the accounting field briefly, but my heart was in teaching.

I've taught all levels of math and Spanish in secondary schools, with some experience in middle school and universities (including being a teaching fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill). While I have a thorough knowledge of the material, it's even more important that I have experience in seeing how students think and reacting and crafting lessons and explanations accordingly. I never teach "in a vacuum," meaning that wherever possible and appropriate I tie in the current knowledge with previous topics and with an eye to the future.

Just this past year I tutored groups of students in SAT preparation, both in math and verbal, and a few years ago I tutored English for an organization in San Diego. Altogether, I've been tutoring for standardized tests for 30 years and know the patterns and concepts that are tested quite thoroughly. I am confident that I can get the material across in simplified, understandable, fashion.

Final note: I am usually available one or both weekend days.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Golf

I spent two seasons as an assistant JV coach under a former PGA tour professional. He asked me back for another season after the first, so I believe his recommendation would be solid.

Hi, Jamal! When you see identical terms in two binomials and the signs are one plus and one minus (or one minus and then one plus), you have "the difference of squares."  All you have to do is square the first and second terms and put a minus sign between them.  (x^3+y^2)(x^3-y^2)=...

Hello, Jamal! The first thing I look for in simplifying (or solving) a rational expression or equation is an opportunity to factor common terms.  In the numerator it's x^2, yielding x^2(x^6 +1).  One of the x's of the x^2 in the numerator will cancel with the x in the denominator,...

Hire this man! — Mark made such a difference for us. In a short amount of time he had my son able to pass the Mira Costa Algebra Placement exam the first time. He saw other tutors but having someone relaxed who made him feel capable and confident made all the difference. It's not just about the content, it's about being motivated to keep going and that's what Mark brings to the table. We'll definitely use him agai ...
