Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I pride myself in new and creative ways to help teach different lessons. I am comfortable with a variety of teaching methods.I taught 10 years in a boarding school with an international student body. Speaking in front of a group can be the most frightening experience! But it does not have to be. I'm here to help you (or your student) in the way that best fits you. Let me know what you need, and we can do this together! I have over 20 years experience teaching speech/public speaking in public and private schools. I will help you improve vocabulary, pronunciation, diction, and grammar.I've coached many students who have achieved a dramatic improvement in their ability to speak effectively. My students have developed the confidence needed to audition, or apply for a job.

Grammar

Is it 'who' or 'whom'? Direct Object or Prepositional phrase?
English grammar can seem confusing. Let me help clarify and simplify. I can help you recognize and use properly the parts of speech and basic rules of English grammar.

Public Speaking

Speaking in front of a group can be the most frightening experience! But it does not have to be. I have over 20 years experience teaching public speaking in public and private schools. I've coached many students who have achieved a dramatic improvement in their ability to speak publicly. Several of my students have gone on to win scholarships through speech competitions. Others have developed the confidence needed to audition, or apply for a job.
I can teach you speech styles including expository, informative, and extemporaneous. I will help you learn how to organize and develop a coherent speech from a single topic. You will learn vocal variety, projection, and appropriate gesturing. Everything you need to become a poised fluent public speaker.

SAT Reading

Anxious about being able to read new material quickly and correctly?
The SAT requires the ability to read quickly--but accurately, to comprehend, and make logical, thoughtful decisions in a limited amount of time.
This can be difficult, but I have 22 years of teaching background to ease the anxiety of timed Reading Tests.

Theatre

I have 25 years of experience teaching, directing, and performing. Theatre lessons can cover a wide range of sub topics.

Theatre history: how acting and theatre plants evolved from the Greeks to today;

Acting: stage movement, blocking, character development, vocal variety;

Directing: learn to select the right play, cast, create blocking; rehearsal schedules, tech assignments;

Dramatic Literature: read and study plays, find themes, motifs, learn differences and similarities in playwrites throughout the ages;

Audition Prep: learn everything you need to know to go into an audition fully prepared and confident.

Writing

Do you have the words in your head, but cannot get them down on paper the way you'd like?
I've over 20 years teaching writing skills. I also taught Creative Writing and edited the school Literary Magazine.
I can help you learn to write cogent, insightful, creative essays and reports.

Highly Recommended for AP English students — My daughter is a Junior in High School and is taking AP English. After the first session, my daughter was not only happy, she was ENTHUSIASTIC about the progress she made on her next writing project. She has mentioned several times how great the session was, and I think it really gave her more confidence as she goes into this 4-AP class semester she is taking on. What a difference! I would high ...
