ADD/ADHD

As a Certificated teacher, I have worked with ADD/ADHD students in both the integrated and Special Ed classroom settings. I have worked with parents, counselors and other teachers to devise ways to help individual students succeed in the classroom and boost performance and self esteem.

Aspergers

I am and have been working with an autism spectrum/special needs student for close to two years with great success. I have worked with autistic and Aspergers students in the past in the classroom setting as one of the few substitute teachers in my local school district that would sub for Special Day Class/Special Needs students, many of whom who autistic. Aspergers is considered a milder and typically higher functioning form of Autism. My patience, creativity and understanding of the social and personal comfort zones of each individual student make me an competent tutor for Autistic/Aspergers individuals.

Biology

I have three secondary teaching credentials in Biology, Physical Science and Psychology, but I can teach a wide range of subjects! I have 15+ years of teach experience at both the secondary and community college levels. My specialty is explaining concepts in creative ways that help student comprehend difficult concepts and helping with organizational and test taking skills.

Botany

I was a botany teacher's aide in college where I helped students identify cellular and other plant structures in both laboratory and field settings and I wrote my thesis study on invasive plant species. I am also familiar with many of the local plants and their properties, uses, habitats and endangered/threatened status.

CBEST

As a credentialed teacher in California, I have passed the CBEST exam (which I did on the first attempt with a minimum amount of study). I can help other future teachers because I am not only proficient in all of the areas of the exam, but I understand test taking tactics, which is often the reason for failures on the first attempt. I feel that I would be able to not only empower others, but help them overcome their fears of not passing and/or help those retaking the test to evaluate and improve their scores.

Dyslexia

As a public credentialed high school teacher, I have had the opportunity to work with dyslexic students in the public and charter school arenas, both as a substitute and as my own classroom students. However, I also have the unique perspective of working with dyslexic adults, as my husband is severely affected. I have spent a great deal of time helping him work on his grammar and writing skills, mostly through editing of documents and e-mails that he has written. Over time, his skills have improved greatly - to the point where he is now able to recognize most of his errors (particularly with subject/verb agreement) before I proofread his work. His spoken phraseology can also be a bit awkward at times, but I understand what he is trying to communicate. I feel that my daily experience and patience as well as my teaching skills would allow me to be a good tutor for dyslexic students, particularly adults who are often embarrassed about having difficulty associated with dyslexia.

Genetics

I have studied the various aspects of genetics both as an undergraduate and as a graduate student, including transcription, translation, replication, gene expression and mutations. I have also taught some of these aspects at both the high school and college levels as units in biology, as well as including current research techniques, and usage in crime solving applications.

Microbiology

I did a significant amount of microbiology work as an undergraduate as well as teaching various aspects of microbiology in my Biology and Ecology classes. I also have experience in microscopy, including electron microscopy, tissue extraction, preparation and mictrotoming.

I have a fairly extensive knowledge of microbiological agents, diseases and processes, including bacteria, viruses, spores, parasites and other disease agents. Having parents in the medical field also spurred a personal curiosity that has continued beyond my educational knowledge base.

Special Needs

I love working with special needs students! I do not have a special education credential, but I have experience working with students ranging from ADD/ADHD to severely handicapped. I am very good devising creative ways to help special needs students (and their parents and teachers) communicate and stay organized to help them succeed in school and elsewhere. My specialty is in the sciences, but I am more than happy to help make time management fun!

I volunteered at a childrens' convalescent hospital in college and have acted as a substitute teacher for at least three school districts as a special ed substitute as well as working with integrated students in my own classrooms.

Study Skills

One of the things that I do with all of my students at all levels is to teach them study skills. I show them ways to organize their homework, take effective notes, and read and rationalizes exam questions. I also review different techniques for studying for different types of exams (essay vs true/false or multiple choice). They techniques that I teach can be applied to any subject, not just science (my main focus area). I also try to tailor these techniques to each individual student based on his/her style of learning. For example, a student who is an auditory learner may study best by listening to a recording of their class lecture, while a visual learner may find flash cards more helpful.

Swimming

I have previous life guarding experience, including pool and beach guarding, working with small watercraft such as sail boats and windsurf boards and canoes and kayaks. I have taught swimming, snorkeling and canoeing to children and am also a certified SCUBA diver. I have also worked with severely handicapped children in the water (those that required a Hoyer lift to get into the water).

Track & Field

I ran track and field for two years in high school and two years in college. I also officiated high school level events when I taught high school. The events that I ran were heptathlon (100 hurdles, 200 meters, high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin and 800 meters) as well as the 400 meter hurdles and 4 x 100 relay and shuttle hurdles relay. I would love to help with events and/or technique training.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
