Algebra 1

I took Pre-algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry and Calculus in high school. When I entered UCLA, I had 5 units of advanced placement in Calculus and took 2 additional courses in Calculus there.

Anatomy

I was a Kinesiology major at UCLA. That is the "Study of Human Movement" or a glorified anatomy and physiology major.

I then went to Paramedic School, and worked for 10 years, for the Pasadena, California Fire Department, as a Paramedic/ Firefighter. There I used A & P extensively in my practice and the documentation of the calls i went on.

Additionally, I've taught many Emergency Medical Technician courses as the primary instructor. There I taught A & P to the students as well.

Elementary Math

Informally, I have tutored a friend's daughter in third grade math. She passed the class.

My background: I took Pre-algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus in high school. When I entered UCLA, I had 5 units of advanced placement in Calculus and took 2 additional courses in Calculus there.

Microsoft Word

I've used Microsoft Word, as my primary word processing software, for the last 15 years. I've written everything from a Manual of Procedures, for the Hazardous Materials Inspector's Position, which I held, to many items of correspondence, to numerous other things using this software. I would hope to be able to give you some of the knowledge that I've gained.

Physical Science

I did well in Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in High School. I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Kinesiology (Study of Human Movement). It was a glorified anatomy and physiology major.

After UCLA, I went to a graduated from Paramedic School. I worked as a Paramedic/Firefighter and then a Hazardous Materials Inspector for the Pasadena Fire Department, in Pasadena, California. I performed in those jobs for more than 10 years. So, I've taken multiple classes in science and worked with it in my professional career.

Physiology

I was a Kinesiology major at UCLA. That is the "Study of Human Movement" or a glorified anatomy and physiology major.

I then went to Paramedic School, and worked for 10 years, for the Pasadena, California Fire Department, as a Paramedic/ Firefighter. There I used A & P extensively in my practice and the documentation of the calls i went on.

Additionally, I've taught many Emergency Medical Technician courses as the primary instructor. There I taught A & P to the students as well.

Prealgebra

I took Pre-algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus in high school. When I entered UCLA, I had 5 units of advanced placement in Calculus and took 2 additional courses in Calculus there.

Public Speaking

I have been a teacher since I attended UCLA. I started teaching there, in their EMT Program in 1982. I acquired a Ryan Designated Subjects Teaching Credential in 1996, which was a requirement to teach for the Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Programs. The coursework for the credential was dedicated entirely to teaching and speaking to the public.

Most of the groups/classes I have taught were the size of an average classroom, 25 - 30. However, the largest audience I have had was at an Emergency Medical Services Conference. I was invited to share the podium with a fellow Paramedic, who is a great friend and my mentor. The topic was the injury I endured and my recovery. I also wrote about that in the “about Jeffrey…….” area. My part in the lecture lasted about 25 minutes. The crowd numbered about 750 people. It was my first teaching experience after that injury. What a way to get back get back into teaching.

Reading

I am an avid reader. My personal library at home includes many books; from novels covering a variety of my favorite topics, to textbooks from the many courses of study I've taken, to biographies and anthologies of and from some of my favorite people. I'm sure the amount of reading I've done has given me the tremendous vocabulary I hear about from my friends. I hope I can create a love of reading in your child.

Special Needs

I went into UCLA with 5 units of Advanced Placement in Math. So, I'm pretty well versed in Math. I have also passed the CBEST exam. With passage of that exam, I applied for and was awarded a California Teaching Credential for Substitute Teachers. The Credential is called the “California 30 Day Substitute Teaching Permit.” With that Credential, I am now a substitute for the Vista Unified School District and sub for them 3 or 4 days per week. I have subbed for all levels of classes, from elementary school through high school. I hope this experience will give me qualifications for this area of study.

Study Skills

I am well versed in education from both sides, getting educated and giving an education. I have a history of taking classes in the following courses of study, and studying successfully for those exams. I graduated from UCLA with a Bachelors of Sciences in Kinesiology (Human Movement, Anatomy & Physiology). After UCLA, I also graduated from Paramedic School at UCLA/Daniel Freeman Paramedic Education in Inglewood, California.

I also have a successful history from the instructional side as well: I have a Teaching Credential from the State of California. I have taught for L. A. County Regional Occupational Programs in multiple districts, on and off since 1986. I have also taught for the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, CA (Caltech) as an EMT Instructor. I have taught for UCLA as a Paramedic and EMT Instructor as well.

I like the use of flash cards as a study tool for memorization of facts. I would make a fill-in the blank sheet, for multiple concepts in one study area.

I know there are three types of learners:

Reading Learners - Those who best learn by reading on a subject. The best way to promote passing a test for them would be through creating/finding another reading source for them on the same subject or through flash cards or fill-in sheets.

Listening Learners - The best way to promote learning by those persons would be through getting an audiotape/videotape of a lecture from the same instructor or another lecturer and listening to it multiple times.

Kinesthetic learners - These type of learners are the type of learner I am. They learn by doing. A quick overview, then do the skill. So, the best way to promote that type of learning would be through repetition and drills.

Vocabulary

I have been told that I have a wide-ranging vocabulary. I'm sure that this is due to taking a number of training courses in addition to my education as a Paramedic and my B.S. in Kinesiology. I hope I can help your child with his vocabulary.

Writing

I passed the CBEST Test and am a Substitute Teacher for the Vista District.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
