Hello! I'm Jabari. It is my pleasure to offer my 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience to meet the needs of your child in the areas of dyslexia, and Spanish or English language development and literacy. My method is: student-friendly, Orton-Gillingham based, flexible, award-winning, and fun! I make it a point to provide a fruitful and friendly experience. And, with your child, I take the time to become familiar with the young one's personal, social, and academic interests. We collaborate first as human beings, getting to know each other, as we strive for a continuous joy of life-long learning. I work with you, the adult(s), and communicate your child's progress regularly.
I thoroughly enjoy empowering pupils who live with dyslexia and teaching English literacy! I am trained in: 10 levels of the Susan Barton method, in linguistics from Stanford, and in in-depth, critical reading comprehension learning from Columbia Teachers College. I was awarded Distinguished Teacher of the Year, for my innovations in English and Spanish literacy by the Berkeley Public Education Fund, in 2010. I teach tutees to: hone their hearing of English sounds, clear up letter reversals, solidify the use of vowel and consonant combinations, read really long words and irregular words, boost fluency of reading and writing, master foreign influences and greek and latin word parts, learn to write neatly, and most importantly, comprehend deeply, and think and write critically!
Spanish tutoring is also a great passion of mine. I have studied Spanish since kindergarden, and I have lived in Mexico and Columbia and carried out honors thesis research for two years in Ecuador, while a student at Stanford. I hold a BCLAD teaching credential which has certified me to be a Two-Way Immersion teacher for the past 15 years. I specialize in helping English native students in learning Spanish language and literacy, at the elementary level, from second grade onward. I am a classical and jazz singer and pianist as well. I use my original songs, guided reading of leveled, worded, and wordless books and games to conjugate the many verb endings within the tenses. I utilize the same approach along with pneumonic stories, icons, and body movement to build grammar, vocabulary, and reading, thus enabling students to speak fluently and have fun!
While I am thoroughly trained, and research-oriented, I never stop learning. Therefore, above all, I am constantly focused on driving my instruction based on your child's current needs, taking queues from their body-language, verbal language, and heart. I also provide stress and anxiety reduction technique as a licensed Revitalization Coach.
I am flexible. I can meet at your home, my home or a location of your choosing. While I do have a 24 cancellation policy, it is my pleasure to offer make-ups. With great enthusiasm, I share my skills and gifts with your child, whom I consider to be a gift to all. I celebrate diversity of all levels of academic level, background, and learning differences. I look forward to meeting you all! :-)
It is my great passion to strengthen the skills of children living with dyslexia. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham-based, Susan Barton Reading and Spelling program at all 10 levels. I am well-read on the latest research in this field, and I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association. I have had tremendous success teaching students in the public and private systems to improve their literacy, and I care deeply about my students' success!
I have been trained in the Dutro method of ESL, building vocabulary and grammar, reading, and writing systematically, using concrete models, technology, games, and life simulation activities. I assess students to establish their proficiency level and work from there. I was trained in linguistics from Stanford, and I hold a teaching credential which certifies me to teach ESL to children from the state of California. I am a stress reduction coach, and I am attuned to students needs to be in a calm, happy environment to learn language.
My training is California Department of Education approved, Orton-Gillingham-based, and aligned with current Common Core Standards. Using the Susan Barton Dyslexia method, I have a multi-sensory approach that explicitly and systematically moves from foundational phonemic awareness and alphabetic principals, to closed syllable words with short vowels, through the complexities of vowel combinations, multi-syllabic words, Greek, Latin and other foreign influences. My practices are complete for teaching the whole of the written system of English to students in a child- and brain-friendly way.
I am Orton-Gillingham trained through the Barton Method. I have been a literacy teacher for the last 15 years. And, my tutees have made great gains. I have all ten levels of the Barton Program, and can work with your child to complete them to empower her literacy. I have a strong background in teaching deep comprehension and critical thinking, as well, through my training with Columbia Teachers College. My linguistics degree with departmental honors from Stanford University, gives me unique, scientific insight into the workings of language and literacy. I use a multi-sensory approach to teach all of these aspects. And, I make reading fun!
I use a multi-sensory approach for spelling and writing using my Orton-Gillingham training through the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling Program, which is California Department Approved and in line with the Common Core. I have taught second grade for 12 years and first grade for 3 years. My Stanford linguistics background gives me a scientific knowledge of all aspects of English. My CA certified teaching credential from UC Berkeley was obtained through training with a heavy emphasis on elementary school level spelling, writing, and reading. Each of these components of literacy depend on and serve the others. I am trained in Handwriting Without Tears for letter formation.
