Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. Astronomy

My experience in astronomy would be appropriate for grade levels K-12. My personal interest has been primarily the study of historical astronomy and cosmology and their relationship to cultural history, religion, and the arts. The study tools I use are computer or tablet planispheres and mapping, and historic models (e.g, armillary spheres, orreries, sextant, small telescopes or binoculars).

Piano

I studied private piano from ages 6-17, continued score reading and sight-reading through my B of Music degree. At the Masters degree level (SFSU) and Doctoral level (Stanford) all piano requirements were waived after passing piano proficiency exams. I am comfortable teaching piano at the beginning to intermediate levels.

Proofreading

In my capacity as assistant professor of music, I was called upon to proofread and advise both undergrad and grad level students on research papers. I have also worked with high school students in preparing essays for college application. I'm well acquainted with the Chicago Manual of Style. I also have some experience in proof reading French and Italian.

Public Speaking

Through operas, solo recitals, concert work I have performed on 5 continents. I have extensive experience in teaching vocal technique and coaching.

Writing

I have written many program notes, musical reviews, research papers (including a doctoral dissertation), grant applications, reports, and administrative documents.
