I am currently enrolled at Mills college is East Oakland in order to get a teaching credential. I will begin teaching high school math in Oakland in September.

I have been tutoring math for the last seven years. I have worked freelance, for DVC in Pleasant Hill (at their math lab), and for UC Santa Cruz (as a learning assistant). I have tutored pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, trigonometry, calculus, linear algebra, discrete math, proofs, and logic (among other things). I have worked with students between the ages of 12 and 60.

I grew up with a strong hatred for math (which is now totally gone), so I have a unique understanding of how to teach students, and a I have an endless supply of patience.

My philosophy with regard to tutoring rests upon teaching students how to ask questions, and how to trust themselves. My goal is to get every student I have to not need my help as quickly as possible (a terrible business model, but it is the right way to help students be critical thinkers and creative problem solvers).

My experience as a student is also quite extensive. During my college career I've taken more than 70 courses from nearly every possible field. My GPA was 3.35. In other words, I can help with study skills.

Seth's subjects

####
Algebra 1

I tutored algebra 1 for Diablo Valley College for three years. I privately tutored six different students in the subject during that time as well (ranging in age from 16 to 40).

####
Algebra 2

I have been tutoring all levels of math for the last seven years. I have also tutored English before.

####
Geometry

I have tutored Geometry at the middle school, high school, and college levels for many students (somewhere between 20-50). I also teach 7th grade, which deals with many geometric concepts.

####
Precalculus

I tutored pre-calculus as an on-call tutor for Diablo Valley Junior College for three years. I taught pre-calculus sections as a TA at UC Santa Cruz for two years.

####
Reading

I have taken classes in teaching literacy at Mills College. I have a degree in Sociology which required me to read thousands of pages from close to 100 different authors. I also tutored a student in SAT reading prep.

####
Linear Algebra

I took introductory linear algebra at DVC several years ago and received an A. I spent the next two years tutoring intro linear algebra on a daily basis at the DVC math lab. I then took an advanced linear algebra class at UC Santa Cruz and received a C (horribly difficult class for math/computer science majors about to finish their bachelor's degrees). During my time at UCSC I also tutored intro linear algebra several times.

####
Logic

At DVC I took Discrete Math (logic based problem solving) and received a B. I then went to UC Santa Cruz and took a problem solving methods class and a formal logic/proofs class, and received an A in both. I also took a semantics class in the linguistics department of UCSC (which uses formal logic exclusively), and received an A. I am currently enrolled at Mills college is East Oakland in order to get a teaching credential. I will begin teaching high school math in Oakland in September.

####
Sociology

I received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz. In order to complete this degree I took 17 Sociology classes. I received an A in 12 of those classes, and a B in the other five. I am currently enrolled in a teaching credential program at Mills. In that program we study sociology as it relates to education, language, race, and gender. I have completed eight classes in the program, all with a grade of A.
