I believe that learning is fundamentally linked to motivation. As a Piano, Composition and Musicianship teacher both privately and in academia, I have seen students reach excellence as they develop the enthusiasm and love for their activity. Therefore, my goal as a tutor is to balance the technical and measurable fields of music with the cognitive tools of appreciation, which lead to motivation and love for music.
My methods are a combination of traditional and experimental techniques that include sight reading, singing, harmony, improvisation and creativity. For the area of Piano I focus on the Bartók, the Ana Magdalen Bach and the Czerny methods, as well as the standard repertoire which includes music by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, and other referential works for the instrument. For the area of Composition I show many different styles of composition, which are analyzed and applied to personal works by the students. I also show my own techniques and strategies of composition based on careful listening of the sounds in our surroundings.
A crucial part of the musical experience is the performance, the exposure of one's work with the public. For this reason I organize recitals and concerts for which my students work with effort and commitment.
As a parallel to my musical tutoring, I offer tutoring in Spanish. My undergraduate education in Mexico City combined with my Graduate education in the United States have offered me the possibility of being proficient in English and Spanish languages and their rules of grammar, syntax and spelling.
My teaching experience includes: Teaching Assistant in Musicianship and the Advanced Orchestration seminar in Mills College; Peer tutor in Spanish for the Spanish department in Mills College; and more than 10 years in private instruction of Piano and Composition.
Since music needs commitment and periodicity in order to give fruits, I try my best to work with my schedule and offer makeup classes in order for the student not to loose the week's activity. In case a makeup is not possible, I have a 24 hour cancellation policy.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to discover the many and wonderful things that music provides!

Of my two undergraduate degrees, both of which I obtained in Mexico City, the first one was in Communication, from which I graduated with Honors. My major was Theory in Communication, which implied the writing of several essays and research papers in Spanish. This experience with writing in Spanish, together with the fact that my first language is Spanish, makes me a knowledgeable and skilled tutor for the subject.
I have played Tennis for 28 years. In grade school I played in several tennis academies and attended to tournaments in Mexico City and Acapulco. I have assisted several tennis professors in Mexico City. Here in Oakland I am developing a tennis community with players that had limited experience before taking lessons with me.
