I have taught in the social sciences (especially psychology) at a 4 year college for over 8 years, and I have had especially good responses in tutoring students through independent study courses.
In addition to my graduate degree and teaching experience in psychology, I am also a licensed therapist working both as a supervisor of interns and having my own private practice. Earlier in my career, I taught elementary and high school students with learning disabilities the equivalent of 5 years full time which has given me an appreciation for students who learn differently and the flexibility to meet them where they learn best. I started off as an "educational therapist" have continued that training when I taught in a university in Africa and my most recent university experience working with multicultural minorities with different strengths and weaknesses from the middle class white student population. It seems to help that I focus on the essentials of any course, assign interesting and relevant essays to apply the key ideas, and test knowledge of the key concepts with tests which build confidence and success by increments of difficulty and challenge. I can also teach philosophy and world religions which was my BA major and then later work at the graduate level at the University of Chicago and UCLA.
